    PERSONAL NOTE FROM BUGSY

To all musicians who might be interested in the job of working for me.

Below is a list of people who are in my operation working with me on making this the most successful band in the Twin Cities.

I am writing this personal note to let you know why we have written this policy format and why much of it might come across rather strong.

I’ve been running bands most of my career, from 1973 through present. I am a business man first and an entertainer second. I moved to Orlando in 1987 and returned 2001. “Bugsy” is starting on it’s 3rd year and I’m come to realize that though there are more musicians than the was in the 70s and 80s here in the Twin Cities, there is much less percentage of what I consider professional musicians as before. The market bears mostly for part time bands but my mentality is one of Full time and eventually full time money.

Many of the musicians that I’ve had the unfortunate time to deal with have poor work habits, i.e. being late for gigs and rehearsals, not learning the cover songs properly, not understanding protocol with who’s running things, etc. And yes, some of these players are like this even after reading and agreeing to the policy format.

I’ve always felt most musicians as good as they are at their craft, most of them do not really understand the business side of the music biz. But there were always a small percentage of people that understood it enough to know it’s a professional job and it has it’s proper responsibilities and protocol. That percentage is much less now than ever before, so that is why I’ve taken the time to write this.

If you’re looking for a part time fun thing and you do not have attitude that I would expect from you, mainly understanding that this job I’m offering needs to be one of your priorities in your life so that you can maintain the professionalism I am looking for, than please move on and don’t waste your time or mine.

Most of you have less experience than I do working in a cover band situation and whether you’re 20 or 55, I’m not looking for consultants or advisors. I’m looking for “sidemen”, players who will do what I ask of them to support my show on stage. It’s that simple.

And for those of you who have full time jobs, I have no problem with that as long as we can work it out for rehearsals and some out of town weekend gigs. But most importantly, give me the same respect and good attitude you give your full time endeavor.

I hope this helps you and your decision. Also excuse the repetitiveness of the format, we have found, some items needed to be emphasized due to past problems with some musicians.
    Thanks for your time.

Bugsy: “The Boss”, Bookings, production, producer of how the band is presented on stage, marketing and over sees all aspects of “Bugsy”. Pays all the bills involved in running the business of “Bugsy”.

Terry Miller: assistant to Bugsy, bookings and marketing. Available to musicians for information, etc.

Rick Segal: Musician Personnel, advisor to sales and marketing.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE GOALS OF BUGSY? Money, gigs, etc.

Starting this year (Jan. 2006), we have started to aggressively go after the Convention, private parties, Fairs, wedding receptions and other one night events that produce more gross revenue which in turn will allow us to pay the musicians more on a nightly basis.

Bugsy has experience with all of these types of events, in fact we do a few now but the last 3 years we have concentrated on the clubs and we will continue to build our relationships with the clubs but at this time we feel by adding the above events on a regular basis will allow us to do more things business wise.

Presently we are 90% clubs, our goal is to go 50/50 clubs and special events.

THE SUBJECT SETTING UP AND TEARING DOWN.
Are gig days vary especially with special events, you’re expected to keep most of your day open for special events, such as wedding receptions, etc. Many times our set up has to be prior to dinner, etc.

Clubs: 3 hours before performance time is expected. You are expected to help unload the P.A. equipment and lights and at the end of the night, help load the P.A. and lights into the van, etc. My Production is fairly small compared to many of the systems out there now.

    THE SUBJECT OF ROADIES:
I have no roadies on payroll at this time, though in the past I have had roadies, at this time there is not enough funds to go around but our first priority is to raise the musician payroll and then add 1 roadie and then finally another roadie. The sound man that comes in now is paid to run sound and lights, not to be a roadie.

DRESS ATTIRE: You must have black slacks and white dress shirt and tie. Tie can be worn loose. We will be adding more stage wardrobe as we go along And you will be required to purchase more stage clothing in the near future.

    “BUGSY” POLICY FORMAT FOR MUSICIANS
*Let me preface this with: This is not just a gig, I regard it as my livelihood and a job. I am looking for musicians that understand what it takes to be a “sideman” to support an entertainer. And as you will read below, taking this serious is a prerequisite.

    What is expected of you:

    1. Learn the cover tunes properly – find the parts that are pertinent to your instrument and learn it properly. We are looking for you to learn it so it sounds like the song. Drummers: do not play something you want to play, learn the song as is on the rehearsal CD, if Bugsy wants something different he will tell you.
    2. Be on time: For example if you are to be at the venue at 8pm, that means 7:55pm, not 8:05pm. BE ON TIME or lose your job. *one warning and then $25.00 fine for any other time you’re late.
Be on time with Breaks: breaks are usually 20 – 30 minutes , when Bugsy takes a break with the band, take note of the time and be around the stage 5 minutes prior to going back on stage so Bugsy can find you. He will give you a 2 minute warning so you can go to the rest room and fill up on water, etc.
    3. NO EXCESSIVE DRINKING: If you get drunk or even start to get “drunk”, you’re subject to being fired.
    4. NO DRUGS: do your dope smoking, etc. AT HOME, several hours before gig time. If you show up with red eyes and acting stupid, you’re subject to being fired.
    5. RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION: You must have reliable transportation, if your car breaks down, take a cab if you have to or call one of the other guys, DO NOT call Bugsy for a ride.
    6. YOU MUST HAVE A PHONE AND AN ANSWERING DEVICE OR VOICE MAIL: many gigs come up at the last moment. RETURN ALL CALLS YOU GET FROM BUGSY AND TERRY. You must be available at all times to perform. We do work week nights.
    7. Dress Code: You must have black dress pants, white dress shirt with collar and wear a tie, loosely if you so desire. If you have other colored shirts you must coordinate with the rest of the band.
    8. COMPUTER: if you cannot get online and/or don’t have a computer we suggest you get one for messages from Terry and Bugsy (Email), we recommend high speed connection for downloading songs when we are unable to get to you the rehearsal CD at any given time. Rehearsal CDs are available when you join the band, they will have all of the original songs on these CDs.
    9. TIME OFF: There is “planned” time off to be approved by us. You are expected to make every gig, Bugsy does not support the idea of subs coming in and out of the band. We want people who plan to make this a priority. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE A SUB FOR YOURSELF, HAVE HIM FULLY PREPARED AND HE OR SHE HAS TO BE APPROVED BY BUGSY. Any money paid to this sub will be taken out of your pay check.
    10. PAY: You are paid every TWO weeks. You will be required to give your social security number and a 1099 form will be sent to you by Feb. 1st of each year. Personal Taxes are your responsibility. VERY IMPORTANT: When you first join the band you have 30 days to learn all the songs, your pay will be docked $50.00 per week (after 30 days) until you have sufficiently learned all the songs and all of Bugsy’s signals (charts are o.k.).
    11. FLOW ON STAGE: Drummer does not count off songs in Bugsy’s band. Drummer must learn what tempos Bugsy wants (generally speaking, tempos are much faster than the original) , Drummer starts 90 % of the songs. Bugsy has signals for 50% of the songs, he gives these signals on stage so wyou can go right into the next song without “dead air”. VERY IMPORTANT TO WATCH BUGSY AT ALL TIMES. Musicians are not to talk amongst themselves on stage, they are to focus on Bugsy and the audience. Musicians are not to “doodle” or tinker on stage with their instrument.
    12. REHEARSALS are mandatory and we will rehearse once a week. every other week.
    13. DIRECTIONS TO GIGS: it is your responsibility to look up the various venues, mapquest, asking one of the other musicians, etc. Do not call Bugsy or Terry for directions. If it’s the first time you’ve been to a particular venue, LEAVE EARLY just in case you get lost.

    PAY :
You will be paid $75.00 per night minimum- on Fridays and Saturdays. Sundays thru Thursday gigs, $50.00-$75.00 per night. – YOU ARE PAID EVERY TWO WEEKS. You’re paid cash for now, by check in the future. In some cases where a club pays us with a check, arrangements will be made to mail a money order (on Tuesday following a Saturday pay day) to you or pay you next time we see you, whatever is convenient for you.

GAS EXPENSE: IS NOT PAID. Clubs do not pay extra for gas, a regular job does not pay gas expense either. Write off your gas expense with your taxes.

    14. AGE, FEMALE OR MALE, ETHICNICITY, LEVEL OF PLAYER: We don’t care how old you are, we don’t care if you’re a female or male, we don’t care what color your skin is AND we don’t care if you’re the hottest player on earth……..none of that matters to us. We are looking for great attitudes, hard workers and people who can see the “big picture” with this project. Players that have enjoyed working in Bugsy’s band have stayed as long as 7 years and just recently a man was with Bugsy for 2 ½ years. Longevity and good attitude makes a band tight, not hot players. If you’re a hot player with a great attitude, great! But it’s not a prerequisite. Again, your job is to support Bugsy, the entertainer/singer.

Our philosophy…….READ VERY CAREFULLY………AND IF YOU DON’T AGREE PLEASE DON’T CALL AND WASTE OUR TIME:
THIS IS NOT A BAND IN THE TYPICAL SENSE, YOU’RE JOINING A PROJECT WHEREAS YOU’RE THE “BACK-UP” (SIDEMEN) TO BUGSY THE ENTERTAINER.
This is what Bugsy does for living, he takes it very serious. He’s been doing this for over 30 years. We’re not looking for consultants, we’re not asking for advice and we’re not looking for weak minded people. Bugsy Productions’ definition of a Pro is someone who can adhere to the above rules and can take direction from the Music Director and Bugsy without getting upset or feeling like we’re attacking you personally. This is a no nonsense business, so if you’re a person who does this strictly for fun, weekend hobby or something to JUST to make an extra buck, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU.

The debate of why don’t we pay more: We run this as a business. Bands that operate strictly on the weekends can afford to split the band income evenly because most of them have full time day jobs. Bugsy works the music business only. What we offer over other bands is steady work, week in and week out, which allows you to budget for your bills, etc. If you compare jobbing jobs over a year vs working for Bugsy, you would make more with Bugsy. *We will pay more for people who stay long term.

QUESTIONS: Forward your questions to: [email protected]

AUDITIONS: will be held at the Breakaway Bar and Grill in Robbinsdale on Wednesdays, between the hours of 7pm and 9pm. You can schedule an audition between those hours with Bugsy. Also fill out the enclosed application and send it to Bugsy Productions as soon as possible. (SS# after your hired)

Call 952-322-5510 or send an email to [email protected] with the following info:

When you call to set up an audition:
    Give your name
    What instrument you play
    Do you sing?
    Your phone number
And what time you plan on coming. We will contact you to confirm the time.

*Have 3 songs ready from the songlist, also have a song ready for you to lead sing on, if you sing.
Bring the gear and equipment that you will be using when playing for Bugsy.

If you don’t bring your pertinent gear, you will not be allowed to audition.

    OTHER MISC. INFORMATION:
    1. Fines will be deducted for policy numbers 1., 2. and 4. (If you are not fired.)
    2. When you first join the band, USE CHARTS and put them in alphabetical order, Bugsy does not use “set lists”, he calls off songs at random depending upon the audience. DO NOT TRY TO MEMORIZE SONGS ON STAGE, MEMORIZE SONGS AT HOME, ETC. Use your charts until you have sufficiently memorized the songs.
    3. COMMITMENT: do not ask for time off without giving at least a 4 month notice of an event or situation that is coming up that would cause you to miss a gig, such a wedding, family reunion, etc. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE A SUB READY IN THESE SITUATIONS. We usually take time off in months that have 5 weeks in them. Since we do this for living, we work as much as possible, including Thanksgiving Eve, during Christmas week, sometimes Christmas Day night, etc. Be available at all times. If the money is coming in sufficiently than we will look to take more time off to prevent “burn out”. If you sub-out more than twice in any calendar year, you will be replaced as a permanent member and put on our sub list.
    4. You must try to be consistent night in and night out. If you get bored easy with cover music, this band is not for you.
    5. You must be able to take direction from Music Director and Bugsy. This is not a democratic situation.
    6. This policy format applies to rehearsals, band meetings and anything having to do with the business of “Bugsy”.
    7. Performance dates: At this time we perform Friday and Saturday every week. Keep your schedule open to perform other days of the week, Monday through Thursday. We use these other days to work at new clubs, private parties and rehearsals.
    8. The job description is: To be there for setup, sound check, performance, tear down, learn songs properly and rehearsals. That’s what you are paid for, that is the job description. Bugsy Productions reserves the right to alter your pay if you do not adhere to the job description.

        WTF?

If this guy is professional as he tries to make out shouldnt it be his responsibillity to organise subs?

Who the fuck would want to be a part of that?

The demands are downright rediculous IMO, and yeah you could easily make more money gigng here doing blues...

I thought one funny part was the bit where bugsy doesent use setlists lmao isnt that what pretty much every pro musician does?

Sounds to me like most applicants would be bored out of thier ass on stage with all the restrictions bugsy wants lmao

OK, my question is Who The Fuk is Bugsy ? He sounds like a rock star. But wait a minute, he is playing covers in local bars. I guess some people have a different idea of what being a rock star is.

Re: Your standard gig side contract/application?

Oh, I had to just see where he's at after I helped him start up his band when he moved here from Florida. This guy told me three years ago that in two years he'd be paying a 100.00/night and playing the 'A' rooms. He still likely demands weekly practice on the nights off and we had to drive at least an hour if not two to gigs.

Oh, I had the pleasure of working for this windbag for about 4 months. He didn't like it much when I found another steady decent paying gig about a month into rehearsals. He struck me as being an egotistical prick and he wasn't even that good of a singer, quite a limited range.

The best part about it is you get to transpose a song on the spot if he can't sing it in its original key (typically you have rehearsed it in this key anyways)..and he has about as much range as 'the Godfather' with a cold.
Not using setlists is his trademark, you have to watch him like a hawk and he'll call a song with a hand signal.
This is his idea of keeping each 'show' fresh and professional so he be free to interact with the audience & go with where to take it based upon their interactions.

Oh, he was definitely could be a little on the psycho side if you broke any of his 'rules' or didn't do as directed.

Needless to say, I think he's gone thru his pool of backup talent that would be 'on call'.
