• WOW, Its been a WHILE!

Hey everyone, its been quite a while since I have been here and posted anything. Its been a long year for me last year but Im glad to be back online and back to being able to do a few of the things I enjoy.

My year was filled with a few MAJOR treats last year. I started working for a touring sound company and got a chance to do a few major events. I got to meet the guys from Megadeth, Dream Theater, 38 Special, Fear Effect, Seether and many others.

Im pretty much off for the winter and have some free time now so I can get things back somewhat in order. Hopefully I can use the experience I have gained over the summer to help out here a little. If anyone has any sound reinforcement questions I would be glad to do my best to answer them.

Well, anyway, Im glad to be back!

How does Geddy Lee of Rush get such great bass tone out of those washers, dryers and vending machines he has on stage with him?

something about mixing and EQ-ing Portnoy's drum set and the whole band would be interesting.

One of the biggest things I learned this summer about miking the kit is the use of a good compressor limiter on the kicks and floor tomes. The EQing is done by room. When your setting your kit, start with your eq flat and boost the low end till you start to get rumble. Find the freqs that are going to give you trouble and cut them back slightly. The compressor is much more important when playing indoors than the eq as it is what gives you that tight punchy tone.

I never understood this till I had to set up the kit in Big Sandy Arena in Hunington, that place is an acoustical nightmare.

The Comps that I use now are 3 DBX 266 stereo unit. One unit is set up just for the kicks, and the rest are used on the toms. The nice thing about this is it limits the ambient noise off the kit for each mic.

As far as the rest of the band goes, everyone is great to work with and very pleasant. At one of the shows I took my brother in law cause he realkly wanted to meet Dave Mustaine. While we were at lunch in the arena John noticed that my brother in law is an amputee and took the time to bring him a cup of coffee and joined us for lunch.

If someone noticed in a restroom that your brother in law is an amputee, what exactly is he missing?

LOL! not in the restroom....we were in the cafeteria eating lunch. My brother in law is missing a leg from the knee down due to an accident when he and I were younger.

what about compressors and snare? I love when snares are compressed, it makes the sound very punchy.

I dont usually use a compressor there, I like to reverse phase the snare, mic top and bottom. You can get some really interesting tones that way.

yeah, I like two mics on the snare too,
same thing with the kick drum, one mic inside of the kick and the other outside.
