• Does your "band" suck (badly)?

I put "band" in quotes because it's more a group of people I get together with on a weekly basis to play music. We're so awful that I can't imagine playing in front of people other than maybe some close friends. We don't even have a bass player, though they keep telling me their bass playing friend will show up one of these days. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to be in any serious / pro kind of group. And it's nice to have a place where I can go and play with a real drummer and be able to turn up my amp without pissing people off. BUT, we've been playing together for almost a year, and during that time there has been very little improvement. The sad thing is these guys seem to think we're pretty good and keep threatening to set up gigs. I insist that until we get a bass player I'm not doing it. Honestly, even if we did get a bass player I'm still not sure I'd be comfortable playing out -- we're that bad!

The drummer decided he wanted to play drums about 3 years ago, and he's no spring chicken. While it's admirable he'd try and pick up an instrument at his age, I just don't think it's working out for him. To put it frankly, the guy couldn't hold a beat if his life depended on it. With almost every attempt at a fill, he will cut the measure short. Since there's no bassist to keep the song driving, it basically f*cks the entire song. I gave him my drum machine to practice along with, but I don't think he's used it even once. I have tried getting everyone to play along with a click track / drum machine beat to hopefully fix the rythme issues, but they can't seem to appreciate the need to practice like that regularly.

The singers are almost always off key. One of them can sing really well, but only on boring chick songs. Anything more agressive and she sends the family pets running for cover. Singing is something I don't do well at all either, so I'm reluctant to criticize. Plus I'm not sure it would really accomplish anything. The drummer is actually a reasonable singer and does backup vocals pretty well, unfortunately it makes his awful drumming even worse when he tries to drum and sing at the same time. Sigh.

Another member can't seem to decide whether she's a singer, electric guitarist, acoustic guitarist, or keyboardist, and ends up doing all of them rather badly. Too bad, she'd probably be reasonable if she stuck with acoustic guitar, but she doesn't seem to want to do that.

I guess the good news is they are all interesting people and I enjoy hanging with them, drinking a few drinks, playing a few songs. We're all busy with families and careers, so I can't really expect they dedicate that much time at getting better. But still, at some point I gotta wonder whether I'd be better off hanging out in my studio and doing some solo recording!

Oh well, just had to vent. I hope this amuses some of you!

Do you at least get the chicks for being in a band?

I like that. I think it's a matter of what makes you happy and what you want you want out of the project you are in. Some people are content to jam once a week or whatever and have no intentions of playing out, and that's fine for them. You also should explore your options if you leave that project. Sometimes being in a shitty band is better than no band.

I use a few simple rules for wether I want to be in a band:

1. Is everyone on the same page as far as style, drive and ratio of covers vs. originals.
2. Does everyone get along?
3. Is everyone capable of doing the music ?
4. (Here's the big one) Do you look forward to band practice every week?

Jack -- no, no chicks, but my wife likes it that way.

Matt -- it's not that I don't want to play out. Actually I freakin' LOVE playing out, I just have some standards on the quality of the music I will be seen performing in public, and those standards aren't being met. Trust me, if we were to play out, you would NOT find it entertaining!

I think from your list of 4 rules, I meet (2) just fine, we get along well, and for the past year I met (4), but my looking forward to practice has been starting to wane... I'd love to find a new project but that's pretty unlikely, so If I were to bail I'd just end up with more free time (maybe not such a bad thing.)

Oh well, Matt's suggestions are probably better then.

Yeah, my other band has that same problem. We usually just end up getting stoned and listening to music instead of writing music, because we can't talk over our bassist who is ALWAYS walking as fast as he can, no-matter if we're playing a song or trying to get something accomplished. Our other guitarist likes to make stupid high pitched noises too, so nothing ever gets done.

Our bad REALLY sucks. With that said, the thing to remember is that if your having fun doing something it doesnt matter if you suck or not. I know there are poeple that will disagree with this, and we have a name for them as well.

So just keep getting togeter and having fun doing whatever makes you happy. You dont have to gig or be great to enjoy playing.

Just have fun, my friend is absolutly terrible, but its still fun to jam, I gotta switch from lead to rythmn all the time and our other buddy is a great acoustic player, but isn't even into the same kinda music we are but its fun to get togther and play, alcohol helps, (A LOT)!!!

Matt is right on with his answer. I set up the few bands I was in like a business. If every band member is going in a different direction, you will have a suck ass band. If everyone is on the same page musically and otherwise, you got a good shot at getting gigs, women, money and kickin some ass. Not always in that order. The key is surrounding yourself with the right people.

1. yes
2. no
3. yes
4. depends...i look forward to rehearsal in the sense that i want to play the music and i want to write new stuff, but i don't look forward to meeting them...well, one of them.

take it like this....my band doesn't suck, but the other guitar player has an ego twice the size of yngwie's - yep, that's hard to imagine, i know, but that's the way it is

as far as your situation goes...i'd say go and look for a bass player who's really serious about what he's doing, maybe that's enough for getting some momentum back in your band. seems like the other guys just like to noodle around, i guess lack of inspiration and drive is the main issue here, judging from what you said.

Bert,

Let's assume from what you wrote that you are actually much better than the rest of the band. So what are you doing in this band? Why not join another one that's more to your liking where the members are more skilled?

I do feel I'm a notch or two better than the others in the band, though I'd say by JCF standards I'm still a hack (too much damn talent around this place!) I've got a job, wife and kids that take priority over the band thing, though I do take music seriously and enjoy working on getting better at playing and performing. So yes, finding another band is something I've been thinking about doing. What's stopping me? The big problem is finding compatible musicians with access to practice space. It was pretty easy when I was in my 20s.... it's a lot harder now, especially out here in the 'burbs. Before I started playing with this group, I had been bandless for several years. Kinda like sex I guess -- after you don't get it for a while, sometimes you just gotta drop your standards!
