  • Computer Question (explorer)... Need help/advice

Hey guys, im having an interesting problem. Every once in a while, I will visit a web page and it will half way load up, and then stop and the CPU spikes to 100%. It slows me to a crawl and this is on a new computer with fresh drivers. My old computer started doing this near the end as well. I just started using NOD32 virus scanner, so Im not sure if it is the cause or not, as I was using it on my old install as well and this started popping up. However, Im not sure if I can attribute it to that as whenever I check to see what is causing the program to spike, it just says "explorer"

Anyone have any ideas, or have this same issue as well, I cant find much help on google. Id like to know if it's my NOD, or if something else is creating the system to go loonie every odd visit to a web page!!!

    Thanks for any help!

    Easy. Get firefox.

It really is that much better.

If not... try upgrading to a new version, but with windows that will either fix it, or make it worse. It's a gamble.

    Good Luck!

Firefox is that much better, but it's not without it's ownissues. It's a memory hog and I have similar problems when I don't close FF all the way for a few hours.
Troubleshooting something like this is pretty intensive. It could be NOD, are you familiar with Windows Taks Manager?

yes I am, im fairly good with computers and have assembled many and installed all sorts of stuff. Im not a n00b, but it's a weird issue, and im curious if anyone else has shared the same "problem" For the record, it's the llatest NOD32 trial version (2.5)

It's all I can think of, unless it's that WMF exploit at work?

I'd start by taking a good look in the process tab of the Task Manager. Make sure to sort by CPU, then CPU Time, then Mem Usage and see which processes are taking up most of your resources. This should tell you if NOD32 is causing problems, I'm not familiar with that particular AV app.
Are you up to date with the Windows Updates? Please please please tell me you are running XP Service Pack 2, and not an SP1 hold out.

If Taskmanager says "explorer", it's not "Internet Explorer", it's the base Windows Explorer that runs everything else. Firefox won't help in that situation.

I'd say get spyware and other scanners, but then you end up running so many anti this or that apps that sometimes it's just as bad as being infected.

ive ran a fully updated ad-aware, and a fully updated NOD32, no issues.

Im gonna try firefox out. It's a weird issue no doubt, and one even weirder that it never started happening till i installed NOD32 on my old computer. However, even after I removed it, it would still happen. And now its happening again on my NEW computer with completely different hardware.

              Lol..

              Getting a little frustrated!!!!

Im trying out Firefox though, I liek the interface. My AMD dual core + 2 gigs ram can take care of the heavy resources pretty easily!!!

Firefox is great on the PC. I'm not a big fan of the Mac version. Next you need to install the Adblock extension, and the BugMeNot one is great too.

If it didn't start till you got NOD, then NOD is the problem. When you uninstall software, it's never really "gone", and whatever it's screwed up on your system will stay screwed up.

If you watch the installation progress bar of any given app, you'll see several files being copied to your system folders. This is because certain Windows system DLLs and OCXs are being replaced by the app being installed. These contain certain instructions and things that the app requires, however, they may not contain everything that Windows needs, or they may be in a different location within that file than Windows was expecting.
                  Think of them like books:
Windows has a given collection of books that other publishers also write which have the same name and same chapters and same words, but the other publishers can add their own words and chapters to those books.
If they move Chapter 24 down to Chapter 35 so they can put in their own Chapters 24-34, and Windows wants to read Chapter 24, it has to find the specific Chapter 24 it wanted to read, so it has to read through 10 excess chapters to find what it was looking for.
Other DLLs and such serve as Index systems that tells Windows where a given Chapter would be located in that file, and a brief rundown of the contents of that Chapter, so it knows when it doesn't find the right one.

I'd stick with an anti-virus that was written by a company that has a better understanding of how Windows works, like Norton or MacAffee, because they've got the majority of these types of bugs worked out.

Re: Computer Question (explorer)... Need help/adv

I have this problem quite often on my laptop and have to use task manager to get out of it. Many times I have to re-boot to get out of the loop.

For various reasons, I think it was linked to the amount of hard drive space I had available. At one point, my hard drive space was down to less than 500 megs. Once I move and cleared away 10-12 gigs, I never had the problem. Now that I'm creaping up there again it seems to be happening more and more.

AHEM it's McAfee, and "McAfee" has been the culprit of many a system failure that I have seen. I cannot recommend McAfee to an enemy. I have been using AVG for quite a while now and wouldn't put anything else on any of my machines. You can read page after page of reviews on it here. AVG Reviews

Hey Matt, does that include the free version of AVG? I have McAfee on my laptop (work), Norton on one PC, and AVG free version on another PC. I'm thinking of AVG for both PCs when my Norton subscription expires.

I just thought I'd mention that I've been using NOD32 for a year without any problems at all. Before NOD, I tried various antiviruses that hogged the computer and malfunctioned in various ways. I didn't know about AVG and Avast! at the time though.
