I hate Norton. I like McAfee, though, and haven't had any problems. Here's a cool free registry cleaner to help with things, too. http://www.ccleaner.com/

Thanks fellows.

It's frustrating because I think NOD32 is great. It's a lot easier on the system than Norton and the simple interface and that appeals to me.

I just spent a whole day firing up and installing stuff on the PC, so i dont wanna reformat right away until I know the exact cause. Unfortunately its not something I can reproduce, it just happens randomly. I have a WD 320 gig hard drive, so space is aplenty. It almost seems to happen when a picture is loading though.... Like I said, tough to pinpoint though. Glad to hear im not alone though!

Next step would be to close down all of the applications you can. Make sure all your web browsers, chat programs, and anything else that should connect to the internet are closed.
Then open a command prompt and run netstat. Netstat will list any open connections to the internet. There is a flag for the command to list out the process ID. You can then compare the PID in netstat to the PIDs in Task Manager to see which processes are accessing the internet.

I'm home where I use a mac so I can;t help you with the flag right now.

Hey guys, I was gonna say what happens uIS VERY similar to this WMF exploit craze. When the CPU spikes to 100, I close the window and it ALL goes away. Im also not using a hardware firewall, could that be an issue?!?

Ive literally scenne dthis thing with everything I could find, theres no spyware or virus using a VARIETY of software. Ive ran all the windows updates as well....

I do this full routine at least once a month and would recommend it to anyone wanting a clean system:

Code:

AVG (daily)
Adaware (twice a month or so)
Spybot S&D (as above)
RegCleaner Pro (remove bad/null/useless reg entries)
Hijack This! (check over logfile)
ShellExView (check for weird shell extensions)
RootkitRevealer (check for hidden rootkit software)
CleanUP! (deletes all temp files and stuff)
O&O Defrag (optimize for space)
Acronis True Image Backup

And that's pretty much my whole routine.
