Last night we auditioned our third bass player in as many weeks. First we tried out the girl(I'm working with her on other, ahem, projects), then last week we tried out our friend Todd from Dystopia. He is a good bass player and we all agreed that he would be a good addition to the band. Then last night we tried out a friend of my drummer's named Ben. He is a guitar teacher as well as a bass player. He totally blew us away. Within an hour he was harmonizing my two-handed tapping riffs ON BASS!!! Then he picked up my guitar and shred off a few thousand notes in a second... He owns his own gear, has a car, doesn't drink, does smoke pot, loves grindcore, horror movies, and is friendly to a fault. We practice with him again Sunday, and as long as he doesn't try and strangle one of us it looks like he's got the gig!!
I am really excited to work with him, he acutally dissected my insane bizarre rythym patterns that I play full of stutters and lightning triplets instead of just faking it along with the drums. In teaching him our songs I broke down the super fast parts and had to analyze them myself, which really helps me as a player!! I feel like having him in the band will really help keep us on the ball musically and help us push ourselves in new directions, which is exactly what I want in a bass player. Plus he is cheerful and doesn't drink, as opposed to the rest of us dark, moody faders... I'm stoked!!
