Re: Things to do instead of smoking?

    [ QUOTE ]
How come no one gets addicted to secondhand smoke?

[/ QUOTE ] 'cus it's BS. My parents both smoked like chimneys when I was growing up. We had big windows in our house and when I washed them, amber water would be there. Did that amount of smoke get me to smoke because I was trapped in secondhand smoke? No. I smoke because I want to. I drink because I want to. Will I stop? Yes. when I want to. But I don't want to. I'm 55 and dead anyhow. (Boy, I guess I have nothing to live for, unlike Ace )

I grew up with both parents smoking in the house, too. I never felt the need to start. I tried it a few times, but I came to the conclusion it was dumb and did nothing for me. I'd rather stand in a burning building and inhale.

Here is a thought. The reason why people smoke and drink and do drugs is that they can do that for themselves. It is an individual's shot at all the stuff that is being done to them. "I can smoke, drink or do drugs by myself and you can't stop me." And that goes for beating off. And then you have to explain that to the significant other. Start doing crack or heroin... they're cheaper than cigarettes nowadays.

Re: Things to do instead of smoking?

I feel as stong as I ever have this time about quitting. The smell of secondhand smoke makes me wanna puke now!

The times in the past that I've tried to quit, I knew I would probably go back at some point, which I did. This time is way different. Can't explain it, but I'm over smoking for good. Maybe it has a little something to do with this:

Especially now in NJ, they signed the indoor smoking ban into effect as of April. No more smoking at bars (yes BARS) restaurants, any public building that didn't have a previous no-smoking rule...the only exemption is Casinos, and they are going to push the ban there too.

Cute kid! They can be a great motivator to clean up your act, that is for sure. Ever since I've had my four little trolls, I definitely have a different perspective.

I do however still drink a lot of beer. Which is a perfectly normal reaction to living with four kids ages 7 and under.

Besides, unlike those nasty ass cigs, beer is actually good for you

When I quit, I made sure that I changed my routine. That was the biggest factor. Of course, I am a smoker again...but I was able to quit for 6 years. It is the hardest addiction to break, because it is an accepted addiction. It is actually harder to quite smoking than it is to quit using Heroin.

I agree, it's really hard to kick the habit of smoking! REALLY hard!

But the hardest addiction to beat is eating, by far. (and that is a MEAN mofo already!).
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

You smoke while you drive. Just put some tunes on and practice singing.

Re: Things to do instead of smoking?

I quit over 10 years ago, during tht time tho it was one of the most difficult changes I had to ever go thru. It does require a change of thinking, a psychological change of mindset and routine as well. Cutting out those times when the 'urge' was the greatest and finding something else to occupy the time. Well, I used to play/practice guitar to pass the time but I also smoked when I played..so even that required a change. I did ALOT of walking, gum chewing but most of it was power walkin..just had to get up and use up that energy/anxiety created by wanting to smoke but not being able to do so! It really helped my lungs alot..now I rarely think of smoking and the desire is pretty much gone.

I watch my GF go thru this and a series of stressor events will throw the whole thing off. You have to be able to get thru those times when it is challenging to deal with life w/o a psychological pacifying mental break/escape. Essentially your just turning your method of handling things into another.
