• Most reliable IDE Drives?

Anyone who works IT or builds systems have an opinion on the most reliable 300-320 GB drives?

I'd go for western digital or maxtor, but my disclaimer also says you did little in the way of specifying the nature of your harddrive usage

4+ drive raid 5 setup using a hot spare and redundant power. Use an external box and hook it up with usb or firewire. If the data is really that important, what is your backup strategy?

Without a doubt Western Digital.

Not an IT Pro, but I play one on the JCF...

I build a few systems, and had best luck with Western Digital myself.

Sorry but Maxtor sux ass. I have had numerous HD failures with these. I would go with A. Seagate or B. Western Digital.
In that order, and yes i am an IT professional and MS certified.

Oh....and get 7200rpm. 5400 is awful....

5400, 7200, 10K are all awful - 15K all the way!! Oh wait, he said IDE. All drives fail, it happens, it's part of the game. Stick to a major brand so you can get good service and warranty work. If you need true reliability I stand be my earlier post. Yes, I work in IT as well. I currently have over 2200 spindles attached. MS certified? Nah, I'm on the other side

For the best and most reliable, only WD will do.
And yes... I work in IT also.

I work engineering.
I like Seagate, but I only work with 2.5 form factor drives. The basic fact is All of them suck when you need them the most. I'd set up at least a RAID 1 (Mirror) with regular backups to DVD-R for anything you actually care about.
Ditch IDE, get a motherboard with SATA RAID (Hardware, not software) on board.

I have always used WD, and have never had a failure. I have seen many Maxtors fail, both at work and home (yes, I do this crap for a living )

I would say the IBM IDE drives are the "best" though. Fast, and very reliable.

I've always had best luck with IBM or Seagate. Few of the drives I see have factory firmware though. Anybody here remember the Micropolis space heaters? Yeah, those were fun.
