Re: Who is your favorite guitarist??

Unchain the Night was the first Dokken song I ever heard, its been Lynch ever since. Meeting him at the '04 Dallas guitar show was too cool.

Tom Delonge!

No seriously, as for who inspired me more? (Dodges thrown objects) Kirk Hammet. Can't say he was the most influential, but he is the only one I could name. I remember when I was probably four or five years old, a meelee meelee solo came on the radio. I asked mom what kind of instrument that was and she said a guitar. So, whoever it was, that inspired me the most.

As for favorite guitarist now, Yngwie Malmsteen.

Yngwie or Paul Gilbert? That's a tough call....

This one tells it??

It was really easy for me to pick 1. I think Marty's style is the ultimate, he never repeats himself, and never does anything ordinary imo.

Though I don't like what he has done after Cryptic Writings...

I am going to get shot for this ( I live in Austin) but I cannot stand to listen to Eric Johnson. The tone is unpleasant to me, the whole thing sounds sterile.

I agree his newer stuff is lacking, I'm not a big fan of Bloom at all. The overdriven guitar sound is horrible and he was awful at G3. But Tones and Ah Via Musicom are incredible albums, and (G3 aside) he still kicks ass live. So I'll amend my answer to saying Eric Johnson during the 80s is my favorite guitarist. Rhoads, VH, Lynch, Alex Skolnick, and at the moment Friedman ( Yes, in that order).

Hetfield got a heck of a lot more votes than I would have expected. He's good at what he does (hell, I was in a Mectallica cover band for over a year and can play most of the old shit backwards), but he aint all that

Absolutely agree with you. I listen to his CD, hated it, then gave it another chance a couple of months later to see if I was missing anything. Hated it even worse, so I ended up frisbeeing it into the water. Never again will I make that friggin mistake.

+1 on the Eric Johnson bashing

that dude's playing is impressive for sure and i actually think he gets a decent tone most of the time but his songs are terrible.

does anyone want his last cd? because if i haven't thrown it away yet you can have it.

+1 too. Eric's playing is great. His song writing is aweful but then again.. I feel the same way about Steve Vai. Every record has a few really good songs surrounded by alot of very weak songs.

Steve Vai hasn't wrote much "songs" in years, he is doin' instrumentals.

To me...instrumental music and vocal music are still songs but if you want to get picky.. I think that Eric Johnson and Steve Vai are monster players but weak writers.
Especially Eric Johnson. I am studying EJ now. He might have the most grasp of playing the guitar of any player I have studied. His writing isn't too good but his playing is beyond belief. Sometimes his guitar tone sucks too. Especially the crunch tones. His Marshall lead tone is really good, his Fender clean tone is great but his Dumble crunch tone is flat IMHO.

Re: Who is your favorite guitarist??

I always call songs the music wich has vocals

that being said Steve Vai kicks most of the virutoso players ass big time when it comes to songwriting.

He wrote half of the songs for DLR's Eat 'em & Smile and Skyscraper, super big hits, sold millions. Now that is a good songwriting.

As far as his solo project is concerned, he doesn't write hit songs for all the people, his instrumentals are coming out of his emotions, and you CAN'T express your whacky sense of humour and perversse dreams with well written melodical song progressions. That would be fake. His instrumentals are weird because he feels that way. Most of the players are scared of expressing their real emotions. Only a very few have gone so deep, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Stockhausen and some more but Steve went further than any of those guys. Steve's instrumentals aren't great hit songs but they are full of expresions of "primal" instincts, emotions etc. wich are more superior to good songwriting as far "great art" is concerned.

When Steve does his solo then he does weird shit, when he is in a band then he writes great songs. That's how the things should be IMHO.
