it was always kirk hammett since I was a little kid, but everything after AJFA is just sloppy with too much wah and tasteless

Struggle within, The God That Failed etc are sloppy? Nah.

I do agree with the rest though.

You guys are cheating. I said pick just 1.
Its all about sacrifices. If you had to pick just 1 regardless of genre... who would it be.
Think about it... what guitarist hits you.. on the inside?

[/ QUOTE ]

gotta pick jeff loomis....PERIOD. the only guitar player who can kick my ass with super heavy riffs (born, my acid words), dark melodic stuff (dreaming neon black, no more will), INSANE leads (this godless endeavor), AND tasty melodic playing (the sorrowed man)

well, name only ONE solo on the black album that's "somewhat" difficult.
my grandma could play that stuff without any slop.....

a good solo doesn't have to be difficult, it has to be GOOD

I'll rock out to Enter Sandman or Sad But True as hard as I friggin' can. Just because the solo isn't 500mph and incorporates stringskipped arpeggios in Am, doesn't mean it can't rock.

yep, sure. but this wasn't about the question whether his leads are "good" or "fitting", but about his playing technique. and as far as i am concerned it's undeniable that hammett's technique isn't anywhere near the level most players mentioned in this thread are at.
sure, his leads (well, some of them) fit the music, i've got to give him that, but i just think WHAT he's doing isn't particularly difficult, memorable, or original.
same thing goes for zakk's lead playing...IMHO....that guy's been doing the same pentatonic wahwah laden stuff for more than a decade. just check out the live at the budokan DVD (ozzy), you'll notice that he only has a handful of licks that he's using all the time.
as far as i am concerned, guys like eddie and rhoads already did that stuff over 20 years ago, and they actually did it BETTER.
there's just no comparison between wylde/hammett and guys like petrucci, vai, loomis, gilbert who are constantly pushing the envelope, trying to play something new and fresh instead of rehashing the same 30 year old blues based licks.

alright, let the flame war begin....

Yeah but seriously now: who gives a flying fuck again? You hit the nail on the head: as far as you're concerned.

I listen to any type of music (including LOTS of ('virtuosos') but I abandoned the path of 'blind adoration' ages ago. I just listen to the songs now and if they rock they ROCK regardless of superhuman playing or not.

So I find it amazing people immediatly go in the attack when certain names are mentioned. 'Yeah KH blabla but JP and Loomis tear that mofo a new one, he just plays blues licks'. They can push their enveloppe al they want, if it rocks I'll rock out to it, but if it doesn't I'll call it like it is: shit that doesn't do anything for me.

Same thing goes for ALL music here.

I take Billy Gibbons over Loomis, Hammett, Petrucci etc. anytime. He is slover than my grandmother but his attitude in his playing is cooler than shit.

Playing by John's rules, I'm going to pick Michael Schenker. I've been hooked on his tone since the mid 1970s.

I am going to get shot for this ( I live in Austin) but I cannot stand to listen to Eric Johnson. The tone is unpleasant to me, the whole thing sounds sterile.

Don't see why. I agree with you. He's a great player, but his tone leaves me cold. It is a good match for his singing though

Have you seen Eric live? I have been seeing Eric play live since 1988. While he can be a little robotic, there is not a person alive on this earth that has tone like Eric. When you hear it live and in your face, it will make you cry. The only other times I have experienced tones that hit me as hard were when I saw SRV at Jazzfest and Pink Floyd on the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour.
