Its funny you say that about EVH. I agree totally!!! I have a hard time listening to him now. I can only seem to dig the Sammy stuff. 5150 is still a good jam.

After thinking about it, and picking ONE guitarist like the title implies, I will have to say when you take away vocals, songs as a whole and focus on guitar playing, I have to pick Lynch every time. I think of all the big names and the competition is TOUGH. but I have to always go back to GL on my list of the best. He just had an amazing style and nobody sounded like him, he just had his own thing goin on. So cast my vote for Mr. Scary [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]

There is just something about the purity of Stevie Ray Vaughan's tone and playing style. It speaks to me on many many levels.

Stuff like this get's me asking myself "what should I sound like? What should my siganture tone be?". Unfortunately my answer is "confusion". I like so many different bands, I can't seem to pick just one. I'd love to just pick one style, one guitar, and be done with it-like Angus Young-instantly recognizable.

I don't think I could even pick less that 3, so I have to abort this post, otherwise I'd have to give a list. George would be among the top, I've painted my guitar tigerstiped, bought a screamin' demon, a TS10, Marshalls, all because of him. I had him sign a guitar I own at NAMM back in 1989.

But I just seem to rotate among all of the greats already listed-Maiden, AC/DC, Queensryche, Megadeth, Metallica, Ozzy's various guitarist, Dio, Savatage, Accept, Def Leppard, ... I could go on and on. I just get a whim as to what I feel like playing, toss the CD in the player, and go.

Lately I've gotten into Thin Lizzy. I purchased a 1977 LP Custom with original pickups, and they are bright and loud. Played through my DSL100, I'm totally nailing the tone of those old classics (I just have the Dedication CD).

But after that, I felt like playing some Sabbath, so I put on the SG Std and went through the Micro Stack. Tonight I might do some Queensryche with the Fusion Pro, or some Lynch.

I just can't seem to pick one and stick to it. How the hell do the pro's do it (pick a tone and stick with it)? Could you live with only a SRV strat, get rid of all your other axes, and set up your rig to sound only like SRV's? Forever?

As much as I love Lynch's tone, if that was the only tone I could ever get and have no other, I'd go bonkers. I'd get the "Iron Maiden" bug or the "Savatage" or "Megadeth" bug crawling up my ass, and when the bug hits, I'd have to play it. There is just so much great music out there, it never seems to end.

Damn, it's hard to pick just one guy. It depends on the style of music, and the mood I'm in. I would normally say Dimebag, Marty Friedman, Chuck Schuldiner, Michael Amott, or Andy Laroque for metal. Woody Weatherman is definitely up there. But today, I'm gonna say...

SRV himself didn't stick with only one tone, one axe. He used a variety of guitars (although he is obviously most closely associated with #1) and a bunch of different amps to get his sound.

SRV has a tone and playing style that I could listen too all day. It's not a style I'm particularly interested in playing myself, but yea... I could rock out to SRV anytime. [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]
