Rhoads, VH, Lynch, Alex Skolnick, and at the moment Friedman ( Yes, in that order).

Hetfield got a heck of a lot more votes than I would have expected. He's good at what he does (hell, I was in a Mectallica cover band for over a year and can play most of the old shit backwards), but he aint all that [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

There was a thread on (oh-no) Harmony-Central where a lot of people were discussing his tone and how to get it. I have Restless and Wild, Balls to the Wall, and one other CD, but I NEED to get Metal Heart - everyone seems to tell me that it rocks.

One more thing to throw out - I'm still discovering new (well, old) talent. I wasn't really into Thin Lizzy until a couple of weeks ago, but now I really appreciate those songs. I'm not into SRV (haven't gotten there yet), never heard Tony M, Roth, Paul Gilbert, or quite a few of the others mentioned. You'd think being almost 40 I'd have all of this covered by now.

I was going to pick Gary, because I think he's the shit. But then I love Adrian Smith's playing just as much. And Vivian Campbell's. And SRV's. And Reb Beach's. And Jeff Loomis. And Doug Aldrich.

It's so hard to pick one favourite, given that it can depend so much on my mood on a given day.

I am going to get shot for this ( I live in Austin) but I cannot stand to listen to Eric Johnson. The tone is unpleasant to me, the whole thing sounds sterile.

I am always amazed at folks around here going crazy for his stuff.

I agree he can play well, and I can't write better music, but really, you guys here emotion in it - decent tone? I'll give you it's different, but so is whacking it with a cheeze grater.

I'd pick Wolf Hoffman, SRV, Matthias Jabbs, Glenn Tipton/KK Downing's stuff got me to pick up the guitar...
