I guess the question is whether the problem is for someone to figure out their own hat's color, or if they need to figure out the color of all hats. If they just need tofigure out the color of their own hat, then yeah, Alexi shouts out that his hat is white. Otherwise I don't think we have an answer. Can you clarify MetalGrasshopper?

This puzzle seems to suggest that the hats would have to be assigned in equal patterns - black/white/black/white. In that case, Scott could see that Alexi and Randy are wearing White and Black hats respectively, so he would assume that he was also wearing a Black hat to keep the B/W/B/W, and logically assume Dave was also wearing the other White hat.

Otherwise it's a 50/50 shot for Scott to guess what color he's wearing, and this type of puzzle usually does not allow for that sort of chance.

So we have established that Alexi can firmly state he is wearing a white hat. He knows that Randy is wearing a black hat, and therefore if he (Alexi) was also wearing a black hat, then surely Scott would pipe up saying he (Scott) was wearing a white hat.

Now that all of them know Alexi is weariong a white hat, Randy can be quite sure that he is wearing a black hat, because if he and Alexi were wearing t5he same color, then Scott again would have said he (Scott) was wearing a black hat.

Now the problem is Scott and Dave. No one can see either of them.

EDIT: I think I screwed up some of the names, but I know it was Alexi who would answer. I'll rephrase with numbers. #4 sees the two in front of him don't have the same hats and #3 knows that #4 hasn't said anything because #2 and #3 have different colored hats. So #3 can see #2 has a black hat and he must then have a different colored hat which would be white.

Alexi must answer because he realizes that if by 9:59 no one has answered, Scott behind him does not see two hats of the same color. In other words, if Scott saw that there are already two hats of the same color in front of him, he and Dave must have the remaining other two colors and answered immediately.

However, since Scott has not answered in 9:59, and Alexi knows that Randy has a black hat, then Alexi must realize that he does NOT have a black hat either (or else Scott would have already answered).

nobody has explained how anyone knows what color dave and scott have. dave's silence only gives alexi the same information that dave already had.
