Re: New METALLICA Album To Be Produced by....
I don't understand all the Metallica hating going on, especially since the release of St.Anger.
Metallica, since the release of Kill'em All, has been a great and inspirational band to many people. While I don't much care for anything beyond ...And Justice For All, I still remain a huge fan and supporter of Metallica to this day. Personally I am not the kind of person to turn my back on a band who gave me so much for so many years just because I don't like the new stuff. That's kind of like that one guy who shows up every weekend for the free beer then tells you to fuck off when there's not any... Metallica at their worse in my opinion is still better than most of the shit being released today.
Bob Rock - Anyone who thinks or believes Bob Rock isn't the main problem behind the decline of Metallica obviously hasn't paid much attention over the years.
Metallica's breakthrough release was ...And Justice For All. They started getting national commercial air play with "One" well before the Black Album was ever a thought. Metallica's fan base was increasing as a result and Bob Rock just happened along at the crucial time of transition. He has very little to nothing at all to do with Metallica's success, but certainly has plenty to do with their downfall and it's painfully obvious.
The Black Album was one the most anticipated releases of all time, why? Because everyone knew who Bob Rock was and all of his many hit making accomplishments? No, because AJFA was one the best albums ever recorded (arguably of course). It had everything from the most incredible tone to kickass writing to total precision execution. The Black Album did so well because of the attention AJFA received, which Bob Rock had zero to do with.
While Metallica gained millions of new fans who had no idea what the fuck a Call Of Ktulu or Leper Messiah was it left the old hardcore fans scratching their heads wondering what was going on. What happened to that beautiful tone on AJFA!? Then came Load, which wasn't that bad as far as writing goes, but sounded like it was mixed by shit throwing monkies. Reload was much better, but still not what you'd expect from a band that is capable of creating music such as every single fucking thing from Kill'em All to AJFA.
All credit was given to Bob Rock for the "new" success of Metallica, but watch the entire video "A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallca" closely and you will see the only thing he is actually responsible for is taming and turning a thrash band into a watered down rock band. Then watch "Some Kind Of Monster" with their little group sessions and interviews and shit. The problems with Metallica is they know they haven't been Metallica for many years and they are scared to face and admit that. Understandable I guess, because they may not know how to get back to where they were. They don't have the fans they once had and they aren't touring as broadly as they once did.
The only thing that can save Metallica now, if there is anything left to save, is a new producer that knows thrash and metal. Bob Rock worked with bands like Pat Benatar, Loverboy and Motley Crue. That doesn't exactly qualify him to tackle metal musicians.
St.Anger - As we all know was the first release from the boys in over 4 years. Bob Rock took full credit once again as this release was supposed to be so hot and so ground breaking and so kickass, and was probably the worse all aorund piece of shit to be forced on the listening public. The end result was the placing of the blame instead of the pat on the back he took with the Black Album. In a pre-release interview Bob talked about certain elements of the recording process for St.Anger and wanting to experiment with "new" things. Brain dead ideas like turning the snare off and cutting the guitar solos as well as shitty recording with lowend analog sources when they have a multi-million dollar digital studio at their disposal... Still though, St.Anger, underneath poor recording, mixing and piss poor ideas did lay that riff master talent James is known for. In my opinion the DVD that came with the CD is pretty damned cool and does sound 100x better than CD. St.Anger probably could have been a good CD had it been produced by someone with working knowledge of metal instead of glam rock.
St. Anger did contain a lot of the aggression the old Metallica was best at, minus the heart, so if that's what it takes for them to shake it off and start writing real metal again, so be it.
At this point I believe they should kiss and makeup with Jason, send Rob back to Ozzy and BLS, write real metal in the style of real Metallica, axe Bob for good, release 5 or 6 new CD's to make up for the Bob years and retire on top where they started many years ago...
But on the bright side, nothing could be worse than St.Anger no matter what they decide to do!
That's just my 2 cents. I hope it makes sense and doesn't all run together. It's 6:30am and I'm tired!
