Re: I am giving up playing metal...

I am not looking to become the next jazz great. I guess my goal is to get to the point where I can play tunes that sound good to me.. so ya at that point I will definately have to post something.

I should ask.. Does anyone know if there is a good jazz guitar forum worth checking out?

Check out a jazz instructional vid by Joe Pass. I got one of his older vids. Pretty decent.-Lou

Zach,

I listened to the MP3 you posted of your band. All I can say is "Wow"; that's from one extreme to another.

How about a happy middle ground? 70's Rock? 80's Metal? I guess since I grew up back then, it's easy for me to recommend, but I can't get enough of it. I'm going to hit 40 next month but Metal is in my bones - not exactly the metal you guys were playing but just your good ol' classic metal.

Since moving to the new house and getting DirectTV instead of crappy cable, I've been glued to VH1C's Metal Mania, MTV2's Headbanger's ball, and other rock shows on VH1C and Fuse. Watching this stuff fires me up even when I'm not in the mood, maybe it could work for you?

But good luck with Jazz if that's were your heart is at. What type of axe are you thinking of for Jazz?

Hey if Hetfield and Hammy can play 'metal', so can you! There's so many different sides to metal, some I never was into. Jazz on the other hand, if you want to check out a great local Jazz/acoustic player, check out Tim Sparks..I think he even does private instruction...no audition necessary. If your heart is true to learning, he'll take you in.

As a great once said.."metal is about attitude" ..RIP Dime.

What happens to metal if you slow waaaay down, play full chords instead of fifths and use a neck pickup on a clean channel?
Aren't you halfway to the blues? It may be lame, but that's a start

I passed a similar period too some months ago,I was not able to write metal tunes as I did before. So I began to listen to something else as Jazz, drum 'n bass and expecially soundtracks. Now I can say that I find music much more interesting but I continue to play death metal.I'm pretty happy right now.

thats a subjective opinion

Jazz requires way more theory knowledge than metal. Metal progressions you can use a couple scales all day and night because they normally they are just root and 5th chords but with jazz you start adding 7,9,11, 13s to the chords you have to be on top of you theory because every chord in the underlying progression may require a different scale and key in order for it to work. You not gonna burn over jazz using jus one E or A minor scale thats for damn sure...
