Re: Best of George Lynch?

I would say the 1st two lynchmob albums are his best playing and tone to date!IMHO he has got worse as a player after these two albums?could it be the steroids?other abuse? Shame realy as i have always wanted to hear that majic he created on those two albums but have been let down badly with ALL his later stuff-Got a lot of his bootlegs guitarstore clinics vids and practise sessions with lynchmob and he sucks on that too!

Re: Best of George Lynch?

George at his better moments throughout his career:

1st Dokken album:

The intro of(guitar solo)Paris is burning - His earliest flagmanship piece. Today, its not that impressive, but in the day, it turned some heads. Lots of tech heard on this piece.

2nd Dokken album: Mostly toured with Dio

Tooth n Nails - Good writting and stellar solo.
His tapping tech in the solo some of the best of that day.
I could so much more good about the song but whats the point? Its a MUST listen.
Turn on the action - Another hot rodded high powered tune.
Nothing really overly innovative as far as writing is concerned, just embelishing the basics of good song writing.
Solo is a another must listen.
Alone Again - Every hard rock or metal band attemps a slower tune at some point and this was Dokken's. They did a good job and the video early MTV played it alot.

Under Lock and key: Change in recording (thus the coined phrase "more commerical" album)approach. Also, the help of MTV playing their videos from this album, made this their most successful selling album to date.

Unchain the night - Very good writing and the solo fits and the solo is a song in itself. Well done.
The hunter, In my dreams and Its not love are all good metal radio tunes of their day. Check em out.
Lightin' strikes again - Great solos in this song. The song has some attitude and a good vibe to it too.

Back For the attack: Trouble in the camp. Don and Georges work relationship had seen its better days. They weren't happy with each other. Only 2-3 songs worth mentioning.

Kiss of death - The best from the album.
Again nothing jaw dropping as far as song writing goes. Written in E has a good groove and vibe going.
The solo, another masterpiece of George's.
Heaven sent - decent a good listen.
Mr scary - Tony mcalpine actually inspired this tune.
Geo. had been previously been spending alot time working writing with Tony, and this is what basically came from it.
Don Dokken didn't want it put on the album. Again nothing much in todays eyes, but back in this day it was cutting edge. Noneless, even with all its repetiton, great tech throughout the tune.

Beast in the east(live): Only piece off the album is worth mentioning. Poorly recorded, sound like a bad boot at times.

George's intro solo before playing mr scary - You can hear pieces of his intro solo of Paris is burning from the 1st album throughout it. Show stopping performance, good stuff.

Scarded Groove: One tune only really but there a couple others that are good to.

I will remember - George at his best ever! Brilliant writing and soloing. Never gets old a true masterpiece.

Since sacred groove, IMO george hasn't done anything original that I would consider stellar, great or even good.
Even so, out of the majority of the eighties guns, george is one of a few that has staying power. The rest were fly by night has been's. Granted, I may not like much of anything he's done since sacred groove, still he manages to keep his face in magazines, small budget club tours, his name and music is still current and circulating. An agent alone can't do that.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

Re: Best of George Lynch?

back for the attack is the better album...its far more consistent ...there's only 2/3 really good songs on lock and key..i can't listen to the rest of the album its dull...although those songs - in my dreams, unchain the night are two of the best dokken songs...back for the attack has loadsa killer tunes ...night by night, prisoner, burning like alame, dream warriors, cry of the gypsy...they're fantastic songs imo and worth a mention..and i don't understand how you can say mr. scary is nothing much today..i'd argue its one of the best instrumentals ever..in fact everyione who i speak to in the UK who hasn't listened to dokken properly always knows that song...which suggests it is something today still

beast from the east is a really good live album i think..and one of the few i always listen to

also, SOAP - tooth and nail.. you neglected into the fire - awesome song..really cool challenging solo...also don't close your eyes is a very cool riff

lynch mob's first album has 4 cool songs...river of love is one of my favourite lynch songs ever, street fighting man has a cool riff, wicked sensation put him into the fastest players of all time list...he's second after vai for that solo according to total guitar i believe...dance of the dogs is cool too...

that's not all aimed at you Soap btw.. its my addition to the convo as well

Nah, "sonic" I never felt you were when your reading your post. Besides, to each their own.
In person, I might have to smack you around alittle with my ESP Kami1.

Yeah, I did forget his two lynch mob albums but it wasn't deliberate. I just honestly forgot about them.
Imo, wicked sensation is a masterpiece hard/radio metal album. The better of the first two thats for sure. I think, wicked sensation is the direction George wanted to go with Dokken. Because it sounds alot like Dokken in some ways but just whole lot better. I still listen to this album/Cd regularly.

Tooth n Nail?
I just mentioned my personal favorites, that doesn't mean I dislike any of the others off of tooth n nail. On a whole, tooh n nail was probably Dokkens best album, but a fry cry from their most successful album. I think MTV helped Lock and Key the most successful. A tie for they're 2nd best album would be a toss up between Lock and key and Back for attack. Either one I'm good.

awesome - i really want a skulls and snakes or a japanese purple tiger sunburst without the gay matching headstock like the us has...it looks way better with the plain headstock...pity they're three grand tho...i wouldn't want one second hand

Cool - some of the stuff you've all suggested has been bought & is in the post to me! Good old e-bay. I'm looking forward to listening to it! Now all I've got to do is get bad GAS for a Lynch signature guitar. You just know it's going to happen..........................

Re: Best of George Lynch?

Lynch was one of my biggest inspirations as an aspiring guitarist in the early to mid 80's. You can't go wrong with any of the Dokken albums (the live one was poorly recorded and has so many overdubs its almost not even live anymore) or the first two LM albums. My favorite recorded tone of his was ULAK. Other efforts have their moments with the only complete dud being Smoke This.
As for the Yngwie thing, I saw George play a couple of months ago and talked to his road manager before the gig. He said Yngwie was a complete dick, wouldn't allow soundchecks even though it was agreed before the tour that they would get them, and did little things to sabatoge the set. Lynch and his band did something on the last night of the tour to get him back but I can't remember what it was.
I have seen George live more times than I can remember, and he was always great except for this last time. He seemed to be simply going through the motions. His tone was so-so, his playing bordered on weird and noisy, and he just seemed like he would rather be doing about anything else...very uninspired performance. I guess when you're pushing your mid 50's, you lose some lust for playing small clubs.

Re: Best of George Lynch?

Wow...metaljunkie and I saw him play in Charlotte, NC early into that tour. You can read about it here.

http://www.jcfonline.com/ubbthreads/...0&fpart=1&vc=1

I thought his tone smoked, and he seemed to really be into the show and the fans. He blew me away, and played much better live than I expected.

Re: Best of George Lynch?

Yeahh Lynch seems to be just going through the motions these days and has lost that fire he used to have If you lads want to hear what lynch would sound like these days if he kept on getting better-then check out www.chadcoggin.com

he is like lynch with WAY BETTER CHOPS and more fire

The sig lynch guitars are very good,i have one of the skulls and snake(wicked sensation artwork)and it plays very well now-when i 1st bought her she was as stiff as a dead dogs dick but has opened up both harmonicly and feel wise to be one of my most responsive guitars i have

One BIG problem is His fn silly push/pull pickup selector pot-its fucking useless as you cant use it quick enough expressive playing, its also too easy to roll off the volume when pullinh for the neck Pup.A piss poor design that lets the guitar down

By Cleveland Metal "George was a MAJOR pioneer in the metal genre for sure in the 80 or so. But at this point, having seen him recently, I wouldn't say he's on a par with Gilbert.

Very tasty player in a lot of ways though. No where near as techy as Gilbert though."

---------------------------------------------------------

Amen, man I was so disappointed.. I HAD to turn my back on him and walk out...I couldn't take it no more..just a shadow of what once was..as many times I have seen him.

Lynch used to be one of my very faves and influenced my own playing and tone...WTF happend???!!!

What I saw that night with John wasn't anything near "tasty"...I think John is being generous and polite..

Well, I'm not!

I thought he down right SUCKED ASS...I /hung out saw Reb playin' George's own material ...no comparison...Reb SMOKED George..and on his own tunes...pathetic!!!

what I saw and heard that night was equal to a B-Grade local Dokken Tribute band.

Justin...it was BAD..it was just very choppy and disjointed and his tone was very lacking with that new Randall set up..

I seen George a few times in his prime..and every note of every song of his is permanently etched into my brain..It was so disappointing to say the least..

and to add insult to injury..

Reb killed when I saw him with Dokken..he just absolutely KILLED!!

That's like replacing Ed in VH and sounding much better..that's just sad man!

He didn't look right..he looked OLD ..real old to me..I didn't know about the drugs..yes, I guess that could do it for some folks.

What a shame, John knows I've been a HUGE George Lynch fan for years..I wished I hadn't seen that show and left my good memories of him intact..

Too late..

George is OLD....an OLD rockstar....and some of the OLD rockstar are WEIRD

But Reb is a kick ass MOFO, a true performer, he has a lot of energy, he moves around a lot, his playing is great and he does good back vocals. And he is a nice guy, an anti-asshole.
I saw him with Whitesnake a couple of years ago, he made me smile.

E I met the guys (Dokken) at the airport when I was a cop there..They really freaked out when I was on their bus..Of course I knew all their names as a fan..and everything and everyone they ever played and worked with...and they like my Mohawk..in uniform!!

They gave me and my wife two VIPs..hung out with Reb and his Wife and the band backstage and sat on stage right next to Jeff Pilson's Ampeg..with my wife on my lap..they treated us like royalty...

Don was kinda weird, but cool..Jeff was a sweetheart of a dude...Mick was hilarious and Reb with his wife was warming up with his POD the whole time he was talking to me and Val..what I couldn't believe is how he was playing while he was talking to me..he was KILLING me without even thinking about it..he was shredding during our whole conversation..Man, he can tap with the best of them..and without effort and hold a conversation!!??

He has ALOT of respect for George and think he's most awesome especially after learning his material, I asked what he thought of him..he played note for note..He just played a Marshall half stack live..very simple rig...and sounded incredible..

Sorry, I can't say that for George at this time...that was depressing for me...I was truly expecting to get my ass kicked...NOT!

hopefully George will get his act together and find that fire that is missing now in his playing. He has always been one of my favourite players and it realy pisses me off that his playing isnt at the level it used to be!In his prime he could trade licks with the best of them, nowdays on his bad days i wouldnt give him a 2nd glance if i heard him playing and thats a crazy thing to say-but true
REb kicks arse-i have his instructional vid here that a mate bought me last christmas-i was never a winger fan so missed out on his stylistic playing.not using his pinky has given him a great voice and made him tap like a MF'r
