Re: Pott\'s American Muscle Car thread

I used to own a 1969 GTO convertible that I restored with my dad, back in the mid-80s. Beautiful car- factory metallic blue, black top, off-white interior, 400, auto w/floor shift, power everything. I'll have to find a picture and scan it in.

That Z/28 is NICE! I love the 1970-1973 body style Camaros and Firebirds. I used to own a 1971 RS and a 1973 Type LT.

Re: Pott\'s American Muscle Car thread

This thread is awesome! I was just a toddler when this stuff was going down, and I find it amazing that you could buy cars like this right off the showroom floor.

My dad had the ultimate Q-ship--a '65 Cutlass. It was just the regular bottom of the line model, but even that had a 350 motor with probably 300HP. The advantage it had was that it didn't have any of the power or convenience accessories, so it was lighter than the 442. My dad says that you absolutely could not floor that thing without losing control.

Sure, you can buy supercars now that will torch the old Detroit muscle. But you won't find 'em at your local GM, Ford, or Dodge dealerships (well, except maybe for the Corvette). And even the faster cars of today just don't have that cool factor--they're sorta like rolling toasters, aren't they?

You're right, the Viper and Ford GT can't keep up with the old muscle
I love classic muscle cars, and have built/owned many over the years ('66 Chevelle SS, '70 Chevelle SS, '67 GTO, '65 GTO convertable, '69 GTO, '70 GTO, '74 GTO with added 455, '69 Vette, '72 Cutlass, '68 Thunderbird) but today's new muscle blows the old stuff away performance wise.

There may be faster stuff out there these days, but they just don`t have that style-chrome and rumble of a big block with headers and duals bro`s!! Jack.

Re: Pott\'s American Muscle Car thread

My Favorites from that era are the 65 Shelby GT 350, 69-70 Mustang Boss 429, 70-71 Hemi Challenger, and of course the 427 Cobras and 289 FIA Cobras. I have a 65 Fastback Mustang that is a project drag car as well as a 72 Challenger that still has the 340 I built for it back in 1985.
As for new stuff, the Mustang Cobras are badass and next year's Shelby Mustang looks fantastic too. The Viper, Ford GT, and the Z06 Vette are cool too. Lets see how long ot takes the Govt. and insurance companies to kill the current crop of cool cars

Wow, there really are alot of Mopar fans here. Interesting....the choice of Geeks the world over.

I admit, they were the best engineered...for the most part.

I am really astounded at what American Muscle goes for these days. I bought my '65 Goat in 1986 for $4500, and it was a restored factory A/C car.

T-37 huh? Man, you don't see many of those these days. Have you ever seen a GT-37? Here's a picture of one a friend of mine in NH owns. They are the rarest of rare. Basically a T-37 with a 400 GTO drivetrain. And yes, the honecomb wheels are original. Awesome cars.

Re: Pott\'s American Muscle Car thread

Back in 1987 my local car club was involved with Musclecar Review magazine's MuscleCar Showdown. There were some rare cars at that event including a pretty quick T-37 owned by Dan Jensen. Others in attendance were the last 71 Hemi Cuda convertible made, a 69 ZL-1 Camaro belonging to a guy named Rusty Simms, a Cougar Eliminator, a Boss 429. In the end the final round was a 440 6-Pak Super Bee vs. a 68 Firebird that ran on the NHRA Stock Eliminator circuit. The win went to the Superbee. In tech we tore down both of those cars plus the third place ZL-1 Camaro. All awesome cars!
For the most part I still prefer my Fords though
