Re: WTF is going on in Chicago? Richard Daley=NAZ

believe me, i'm far from naive. i've had pistols shoved in my face, i've had machine guns shoved in my chest, i've been in some of the worst places on earth. i've had my home broken into. i've had friends and family members that were the victims of violent and sexual crime. i have two children. i take this stuff very seriously.

things like these cameras are a good thing in theory. right? lots of things are good in theory. in reality you are exposing yourself and your activities to people that would not otherwise have such easy access to your comings and goings.

who will have access to the video content?

hopefully, the hiring process is a bit more thorough than the process that hired 90% of the fucktards ensuring our safety at our airports.

hopefully the screening process will properly filter out child molestors, unlike the screening process that is used to hire daycare workers.

hopefully nothing you do EVER crosses the line in any way, of course none of you break any laws of any kind at any time - right?

anyone that believes that cameras such as these will only be used for "good" is naive. and if you think these cameras will be secure...

Everything is good in theory. It takes the people executing those theories to use them incorrectly or incorrectly. What's to say that you, or any of your colleagues, in designing whichever version of Internet Explorer didn't embed something to track what sites I go to? I'm sure that if this plan is implemented there will be stringent regulations regarding the use of these tools and plenty of folks from the Office of Professional Standards watching over them and the ACLU watching over them. It's part of the basic checks and balances that this nation is built from.

I have two friends going through the hiring process with the Chicago Police Department. Both tell me that the tests are definitely designed to wash out undesirables, but the same groups that protect our rights also make it easier for some of those undesirables to get into the system.

I honestly think that the cameras are a good thing for the Chicago Police Department. So often we hear tales about how the police are out-gunned on the streets and lack of leads allow criminals to go free. Well, if cameras help the police get the jump on criminals then I'm all for it.

I'm a law-abiding citizen, I don't even spit on the sidewalk. If I see one of these cameras in the Wrigleyville neighborhood, I'll look up, smile and give them a big thumbs up.

So when you are on a public street, pissing on the corner, you have a right to privacy? Do you think that you actually have a right to privacy when you voluntarily go into a bar? For the record, you don't. And what those cameras record is not available to the public. You know, celebrities are dealing with this every day. And there's not a lot that can be done about it. If you are somewhere that the public has access to, anyone can take your picture without your permission. In many states, you can stalk someone without breaking the law.

The scanners are technically used to determine if the id is fake - better jobs of making fake ids require more enhanced ways to identify them.

If I'm in public and break the law, I deserve to get caught.

And the drunk example - you can't be charged without proof that you are over the limit - and a camera shot of you stumbling is not enough.

People are getting more and more sophisticated at breaking the law. Shouldn't law enforcement be getting more advanced at protecting you?

this is such a catch 22. As far as public places where the camera's are known to be there I am all for it.

All of the cameras that have been placed on the streets so far have a flashing blue light and a big box with the Chicago Police logo on it.

Todd I was talking in general. Just like a bank or casino... as long as it is in a public place and is not set there for entrapment I am for it.

Busted. You got me. There is a feature that does that in Internet Explorer. It's called History. In fact, all web browsers have it.

There are countries where this feature is disabled (at least by default) because of their privacy laws.

I can assure you that this data has been used by both law enforcement agencies on your behalf and criminals to exploit you.

Re: WTF is going on in Chicago? Richard Daley=NAZ

From what I understand, they are not trying to hide the fact they have cameras - it's all over the news. Using these cameras to deter crime requires knowledge that they are there. People tend to think that they have an expectation of privacy in a lot more places than they do.

I know at work, I have no expectation of privacy, on the street, in a store, etc. I expect privacy in my home, but if I walk around nude with the windows open, I can be charged with indecent exposure. There is a limit to a persons privacy expectations. Most of us just want more than we really have.

                        Ehh, our privacy is gone.

An interesting concept I'm hearing about is something about these discount cards for grocery shopping. And selling your buying habits to interested third parties.

With the way health insurance is, how long till they monitor what you buy to eat drink or smoke? AND then correlate that to your insurance policy premiums?

                        Dear Mr. Tekky.
Due to the amount of (heavy cream, cigarettes, beer whatever, etc ect) you have bought this month, we have no choice but to (raise your health insurance premium or cancel you insurance, etc etc).

How far will this stuff go?

                        Orwellian baby...

At this point I'll agree to disagree with you.
