Re: Opeth

The kid on American Idol did it as a joke, and he sang a punkish song with a crappy inversed scream to make it more annoying.

Re: Opeth

Well i don't like Opeth but not because of the singing style, i just can't get into the music.
I am a very big death metal fan so i really can't relate to your problems. I also like very extreme death metal vocals found with bands like Vomit Remnants, Disgorge (usa and mex), Pyaemia and others. I just think the "singing style" fits the music 100%. Sorry but i can't imagine music like Decapitated is making with for example Rob Halford singing.
Yes those guys can't sing, well actually in context to normal singing. Growling isn't easy although many people think that. It also takes practice and some talent to do this style of vocals for more than 5 minutes without loosing your voice.

To sum it up it just is a matter of taste.

Re: Opeth

I got into Opeth (and I love them now BTW) by picking up the "Damnation" album first. I REALLYYYYYYY hate some of the death metal vocals but sometimes the screams/growls can be quite melodic. I tend to focus on the growls as more of an instrument than vocals perse. I've found that several bands can combine a great mixture of singing/growling. Opeth's new disk does this well IMO.

Re: Opeth

I hate death metal but Opeth is the shit! They do the death metal thing but I think it's way off base to look at them as a death metal band. There's a whole lot more substance to the music. It's kinda like death metal meets metal meets old Genesis, Yes etc. Great songs. I don't personally like the cookie monster thing but he balances it out really well and like someone else mentioned, if the musics good enough I can block out the shitty vocals.

Re: Opeth

Thats just it. It seems that alot of death metal fans acknowledge the fact that the vocals suck but because the music is so good they can deal with it.
I ASK MY FELLOW OLD TIMERS WHO GIGGED AND GREW UP IN THE 80's METAL SCENE>>>>>
Have you ever heard such a thing!!
There was no room for compromise in our day. Heck, people used to say that Udo from Accept had a horrible voice compared to the singers of that time. He would have been a god in todays standards.
I do think its good that the metal scene created a genre of metal for guys who can't sing though. At least they get to stand in front of the band onstage instead of carting the gear around before and after the gig like they would have in the 80's. The standard of a metal singer was much higher back then. Come to think of it, the standard of a metal guitarist was higher too. The bass and drums are actually better in many of the new death metal bands than they were in the 80's. The drummer from Shadows Fall KILLS.

it's just not the singing, new frontmen aren't COOL, a frontman should be somone like DLR who is COOL

Yeah, but put DLR's voice up against Mikael's clean voice... DLR sucks compared to him! Sure, he was a good poser/showman/performer, but his voice isn't all that great.

DLR had a character in his voice, Mikael's clean voice is a weenie shrenker for me

I'm not a major cookie monster fan, but like alot of bands that have it. Arch Enemy etc...

BUT,I really think these bands I've been hearing that go from those clean "pretty" (gay) vocal choruses to cookie growls verses are mega gay...

Opeth.. is just friggin boring. I wqas half asleep at their show... Nevermore opened for them, and absolutely KILLED them. And, I'm really not a Nevermore fan.

Apples and oranges here huh? VH was a great rock/party kinda band but the nusic, band type, etc. cant even be compared with a band like Opeth. Musically Opeth is on an entirely different level.

I am sorry guys. I have to agree with JG on this. I don't care how good a band is, if you think you are gonna stand up there and scream unintelligeably into a mic, and I am gonna stay around, you are sadly mistaken. Your guitar player could be Jesus Christ himself. Doesn't matter. I will be outta there in a flash.

But there must be a market for it, right? These bands are all over the place. I saw a band like that at a club. Tight as all hell. I was in awe of the guitar player, but as soon as the singer started, me and my friend looked at each other and started cracking up. It was hilarious. Arrrrr.....Ruh ruh ruh ruh arrrrrr, ruh ruh ruh ruh arrrrrr........yeahhhhhh ruh ruh ruh ruh arrrrrrr

Re: Opeth

Well i never said that the vocals in death metal suck. They fit the music and that's what's important. Really do you think that a 80's voice would fit into death metal ? I sure don't !
Actually you never know if those guys all can't sing. I mean just because you play slow on guitar doesn't mean you can't play fast. The same with those guys. They prefer to do cookie monster vocals. Maybe some of them can sing, who knows ?

And have you really listened to death metal ? There are some very talented guitar players in death metal bands. For example Moyses from Krisiun, Muhammed from Necrophagist, the guys from Cannibal Corpse, Trey from Morbid Angel. Saying those guys can't play is simply ignorant. Will they kick Ratt's ass at 80's metal ? Definitely not. Will Ratt kick their asses at death metal ? Also definitely not. It all comes down to what you are doing best.
