Hey Ron, do you know that 50 Cent made a song about you

With about Sixty point five GBs
'Cause I'm a big computer N.E.R.D."

Well..its not
Lets break this down simply by percentages. With rap you generally have one actual instrument, the voice. And its not singing so much as speaking. Thats MAYBE 5% music. With Death Metal even if you throw out the vocals you have 75-85% music. So I'd say those "hardcore metal guys" have a point. And I should just point out lest I be accused of close mindedness that I love Tupac...bitch!

On another note. Dick in throat vocals..
Those of you who have mentioned Testament's newer stuff should REALLY check out Demonoid album if you haven't heard it. Its some of the best death vocalled thrash I've ever heard.

I personally consider it close minded to down something for the vocals. I like alot of stuff for various reasons and with some of it there are things I hate, often the vocals in various genre's. However sometimes it can be too much to get past, I don't think that means its crappy necessarily, just that its not my style. Case in point, Stormlord. The most disturbing "vocals" I have ever heard. But I cannot deny how awesome they are at what they do. I've heard alot of death and black metal even some of the legendary bands who really were trying and often succeeding in sounding evil, but Stormlord is the most evil music I think I've heard. Its just downright disturbing. And if you are into that kind of thing, that probably means they are pretty great.

To compare them to rap musically...C'mon. I'm hardcore Death metal fan and I have studied music theory for 24 years...Death metal artist have done more to push the boundaries of music than any rap band and most death metal fans are qualified to say so.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry but I think that's a bunch of hogwash. Who cares if you studied theory for 24 years? I studied it for a long time myself. Pushing the boundaries of music doesn't always result in good music.

I bet Keith Richards doesn't have 24 minutes of theory training and that guy has made more great music than just about anyone.

Also note that the discussion at that point was about the vocals. Rap vocals are a lot easier on the ears than that cookie monster stuff.

Ya know, like it or not...Each to their own, I respect that but to honestly compare bands like Death, Cannibal Corpse, Opeth and the like to rap, musically?!?!

Okay...maybe you are just having some fun...Like

But, if you are being serious than you my friends either have not listened to any of these bands or you have almost no musical knowledge at all...

[/ QUOTE ]

You are making the same mistake that others are making. You are equating technical skills and knowledge with the ability to create enjoyable music. Just because someone doesn't have monster chops or depth in music theory doesn't mean their music is not good. Most of the greatest rock music was created by guys that wouldn't know the difference between a melodic minor scale and a band saw.

I've listened to plenty of death metal. People are always trying to get me to "ignore the vocals and just listen to the music". To them I say, what for? There is so much great music out there where I don't have to ignore the vocals to enjoy it.

That is one of the silliest things I've ever read. Who measures music like that?

At this point I feel I should point out that I hate pretty much all modern rap myself. I am a big fan of some of the very early rappers such as Grandmaster Flash and Sugar Hill Gang - those guys had some fantastic players and arrangements too.

Again... I like the music. I just don't get the vocals. They sound horrible to me and they ruin the killer music they are singing on.
I think I have come to figure out why I just don't get the death metal vocal style.

I feel music is based on notes and the interaction between them. Death metal vocals (the gutteral screams and the subharmonic bellowing) are not about notes. They are about feelings. Death metal vocalists express themselves through how their vocals make their fans feel and that is the fundemental problem I have with them. You see... I am a note and melody guy. If a singer isn't singing notes I can't relate to it. If the interaction of those notes has no melody I can't relate to it either. That about sums it up.

and just because some bands don't do the whole 80s "i have no balls" vocal style it doesn't mean their music isn't good.

Seriously, what is musical ability? That's pretty hard to quantify. Again, if you're talking purely about the technical aspects of music then I find the point uninteresting because technical agility and knowledge is not a prerequisite to making great music.

In my mind, being able to create great music is the purest, simplest, and most important form of musical ability. Of course, that is completely subjective. Since neither rap or death metal appeals to me for the most part my score for most of the performers in both genres in the musical ability department would be very low. Technical agility for some high speed rapper or flashy guitarist is uninteresting unless the music it is part of sounds good.
