How music is created is orthoganol to the music itself. Having said that, I prefer music that people play with no drum machines and such as well. But to dismiss a genre of music because it's not created in a way you approve is really not something I understand.

Also, you are making a generalization that is far from accurate. There is a ton of rap music that has featured some amazing players. The problem is that it gets about the same amount of air play as death metal.

I get not liking the stuff, just not the part where you blow it off on technical merits. Music isn't a competition to me.

Woah I never said I was dismissing it. I consider rap something different. I think of it more as poetry set to a beat. Thats not an insult. Its art just as worthy as music but it is NOT the same as something thats actually played. Thats the only distinction I am drawing here.

I know about some of the bands you talk about but I don't consider them rap. Part of what I consider rap is that it has no instruments in it. Though I never claim my definition to me correct otherwise its hard to seperate such a massive genre of music which can vary pretty hugely across the spectrum. Typically most of the bands that use instruments that have that rap vibe I think you talk about, I consider them funk but not always. It varies. And I admit I don't know every person you mentioned. Just like I could list like 20 or 30 progressive bands and you probably would not know a few of them.

I'm with Chad here. I used to HATE death metal. The first cassette (yeah they were popular then [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]) I bought was of Deicide (I think) and it freaked me out. I threw the thing right out the door, literally. Fast forward to 15 years later....I went and seen Suffocation live, and Deicide, and now I can't get enough. Peoples taste change over time. I still love a VARIETY of stuff. I myself don't like rap, but I can't say that what they do is "wrong", it sells millions. A lot of people like it. It's not for me. It's a simple matter of to each their own.

OPETH!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy crap...

I just got the Damnation CD.
AWESOME. I love every song. What the heck is going on with this band. How come I had a CD with like 20 or so songs on it that were all a different style. I wasn't recommended this CD at all. The songs are great. The production is great. Is Damnation how they sound now? Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Its a VERY good CD.

The new CD is brilliant, but it does swing between the two styles. Sometimes (or often) within one song. Often I'll be listening to a song and forget that 2 1/2 minutes earlier there were death vocals in that song. It all just seems to work

Y'know, if it wasn't for Opeth (and having to listen to the death vox to get to the clean vox) I wouldn't be able to listen to that style of vocals at all. Now I can listen to and enjoy stuff like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Arch Enemy & Lamb of God.

Although I still do prefer good clean singing. Stuff like Halford's recent stuff, or Marco Hietala in Tarot & Nightwish. Or Jorn Lande [img]/images/graemlins/notworthy.gif[/img]
