I just got the Damnation CD.
AWESOME. I love every song. What the heck is going on with this band. How come I had a CD with like 20 or so songs on it that were all a different style. I wasn't recommended this CD at all. The songs are great. The production is great. Is Damnation how they sound now? Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Its a VERY good CD.

Glad to hear you like it!

The new CD is brilliant, but it does swing between the two styles. Sometimes (or often) within one song. Often I'll be listening to a song and forget that 2 1/2 minutes earlier there were death vocals in that song. It all just seems to work

Y'know, if it wasn't for Opeth (and having to listen to the death vox to get to the clean vox) I wouldn't be able to listen to that style of vocals at all. Now I can listen to and enjoy stuff like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Arch Enemy & Lamb of God.

Although I still do prefer good clean singing. Stuff like Halford's recent stuff, or Marco Hietala in Tarot & Nightwish. Or Jorn Lande

Damnation is very interesting. Trippy, heavy, sad and uplifting. I'm digging it bigtime.

Deliverance is a must have if only for the incredible song "A Fair Judgement" no death vocals there and more importantly its a metal song. GREAT solo in that song too. Not flashy but just perfect. Those two cds are thematically linked as well.

COOOOOOOL , Damnation reminds me more of some early 70s prog stuff than anything else. Deliverence kinda splits between the 2 and the newest one is kind of a different direction as well, still going between the 2 styles but it's got a pretty different sound from the older stuff as well. I know alot of OPeth fans aren't really digging it but I do.

Opeth is my favorite band. It took me a while to get into the vocals, and from there I got into other dm stuff.

Must be why I hate it... Two bands I listened to incessantly as a teen that if I never heard again in my life, it would be too soon...

Except maybe Animals... I can still stomach that one.

Actually, after listening to it several times I think it sounds VERY much like The Allan Parsons Project.

Yes ..That too John G..very early 70's trippy prog rock!!!

something to listen to when my dad burns one!!!

John if you like this ..then check into Dan Swano's Nightingale stuff..any one will do..they are friends and very similiar in style..and Dan has been doing that gig for some time now..very melodic, very moody and progressive....ALL clean vox!!

Dan does the hard stuff too..just as Mike does.

Just for info..Dan Swano produced our own JCF brothers Anders "Ruin" cd and I'm VERY jealous of that!!!

Good call, Bill & John.

I can probably trace my enjoyment of this stuff back to my dad's old Moody Blues, Floyd & Allan Parsons albums. I seem to be listening to quite a bit of this style lately. Can't get enough Porcupine Tree.

So there you have it. My dad's musical influence in my formative years has lead me round to death metal. Although when you factor in the Sabbath, Purple & Cream we would listen to as well, it's probably not that big a stretch. Proggie stuff tempered by big distorted guitars.

Do you people who hate growls see any talent at all in it? Can you make sounds like that? More importantly, could you do that for an entire gig without losing your voice and be able to chat with fans afterwards? I'm not a big fan of Opeth, but I'm amazed that a person can growl like that, then do clean, then back again.

I can, with ease, I can sing Still Of The Night first verse exactly like David Coverdale and the second one with orc's dick in throat vocals. I'm just too damn good.

If you have the time, I wouldn't mind hearing a recording of you singing Still of the Night that way.......but only after you've death growled for at least an hour straight.
