• Job application BS

Alright people.

Im studying for my psychology degree at the moment and I also work a part time job (22 hours a week) in an outdoor clothing shop. Im probably one of the few people on my course who actually wants to work in the field of psychology in the future and isnt just doing this degree for the fun of it.

I applied for a placement (March - November) at my university as although my grades wont be as good as other peoples, Im hoping to gain lots of crucial work experience in this area to put me in a good position with a view to working.

I never heard back from the researcher so I emailed and asked if my application forms had been received. She emailed back and said I had got down to the final three, two of which had more experience. So the plan was to interview those two, and if they fucked up, get me in as a reserve. They interviewed the first guy and just went with him.

She said the reason I wasnt interviewed was because of my lack of research experience and interview experience.

How the fuck am I supposed to get research and interview experience if I keep getting shot down like this? This isnt the first time its happened.

Im pissed off and disappointed now so this is probably all heat of the moment, and although the researcher actually said she was impressed with my application etc, all Im thinking about is the fucking fact that theyve turned me down.

I know its not the end of the world and that its not even like I need this job for the money (although it would mean I could get out of debt). But it would have been amazing and would have given me crucial experience.

Pretty common, they want someone with experience. Had that a lot in my time as well man. How can you get the experience when no one will give it to you. Usually, you'll get it by giving them a free employee.

Then like in my case now, I got experience and no good college diplomas, so that is their reason to not hire me!

Hard to win sometimes....

Welcome to the real world.

Most companies want someone with experience. They don't want to spend time and money training you. However, there are some that will. Hang in there and you'll find something.

Also, look for internships, paid or otherwise, to gain experience. They often turn into full-paid positions.

Jeff300 is correct - one of the best ways to get experience and make connections is to do internships. I'm not sure how they work in England or elsewhere oversees, but here in the states you can sometimes get credits for the internship, sometimes get paid, and make great connections for when you graduate.

Internships count for big points on a resume!

Aye. It was a nightmare getting my job in a shop. I had no retail experience cos Id only worked in factories (I can use a CNC laser marker though ).

I guess Ill get experience. I was halfway through sorting out some voluntary work with a psychologist before this opportunity came up.

Ah well

It sounds to me like maybe you need to see a shrink.

I do have a question though... Your last statement was:
"I know its not the end of the world and that its not even like I need this job for the money (although it would mean I could get out of debt)"

I am just wondering... if you don't need that job for the money, why are you working in the first place? I have always felt that most of us work FOR THE MONEY. If we didn't need money we would stay home and type away on the JCF and jam out on our guitars.

[/ QUOTE ] He already has a job at an outdoor clothing shop. I am guessing that the other job he applied for would have paid a bit better so he could get out of debt.

EDIT: I misunderstood your post John. Sorry.

Yeah Stuka it would be a second job. Its not like with me not getting the second job Ill starve, but if I did get it it would have been easier to pay my car insurance rent, petrol money, etc without having to cut back on things like CDs or DVDs (Which I can hardly afford as it is).

Im a student in univeristy with money saved from working over the summer for me to live off.

The whole reason I was applying for the second job was to "get my foot in the door" in the psychology world. If my CV has more placements and experience than the next guy, Ill have a higher chance of a job regardless (obviously only to a certain extent) of my qualifications. Its back to the whole 'experience' issue.

Welcome to the university experience. This is why many university are accused of being out of touch with the outside world, they constantly choose people "like themselves" for positions. It's very tough to even get in the door.

this is typical. i've seen all kinds of stupid stuff in my field. stuff like jobs that have requirements such as "5 years experience programming for OS/2" sixth months after OS/2 first shipped.

Mr. White,
Thank your lucky stars that you don't have tons of experience and are falling on your face like I am. Believe me, you don't ever want that feeling. You're in the drivers seat, and I hope you do really well. You will.

Wait till they reject you for a job because you HAVE too much experience (and you would want more money)!

I was passed over for a job because the guy had a masters in accounting and I don't have a masters degree. It as for a C++ job which I had years of experience and he had none

BTW, I worked for FREE as a programmer to get my foot in the door way back. I took a night shift job and worked as programmer during the day.
