"always try and tap your foot along with the music. That helps you stay in sync with everyone and helps you come back in time during breaks"

well, that would require your drummer to be in time

Re: Help with getting better/timing

Thanks guys! I'll keep plugging away. One bad habit I know I have is playing with no CD or metronome or anything, just guitar & amp. I'm working on fixing that and playing along with a CD a lot more often. Sorry to the mods., I forgot we had a technique section here, so I posted this in the wrong forum.

LOL This is true. I was assuming that though since if your drummer isn't in time you sure can't bitch at a guitarist or someone else for fucking up the time. It's a lot harder for a guitar to throw the drums off than it is to do the opposite.

yeah, definitely.
well, the reason for me posting that remark is that i actually tried that for a few weeks. we have a few song parts that are always a bit tricky to do in a tight way, especially live on stage. for example, there's one song where we're going from a chorus to a break, one guitar (=me) playing the riff, the rest of the band playing accents. now, the issue was that my drummer always had the tendency to slow down during that break as opposed to the chorus (although it's supposed to be in the same pace), and if i tried to tap my foot to the speed of the chorus and try to get through that break in this speed it'd end up as a mess
for such cases, the best advice i can give is to FEEL the music....play as fast as your guts are telling you, chances are it'll end up just fine (in that example i posted above, it does )....ah yeah, and slap the drummer every time he fucks up

yeah, great...think about it, technically speaking you could also fire him and use a drum machine

seriously, tons of GREAT bands and I mean HUGE bands use metronomes in live performances even if the drummer is a schooled jazz pro, who's head is like a metronome.

I'd say play by ear listen to what others are doing, slow down or speed up or let them follow you as lead..........tapping your foot does build the rhythm.......

This may sound silly but I think you should try to "listen" more, not totally concentrate on the thing you play then you can understand when you're getting faster and then start stopping that
