• Hey car guys, question on tires.

I'm looking at new tires for my Accord. I want a decent tire, with decent tread rating, and good traction.

I found two, that I'm torn between. I used to always be a Michelin guy, but I think I want a change. I understand that you're paying for a name, in the higher name brand tires, however I think you get what you pay for.

My tire size is 195-60-15 My car ships with H rated tires, so that or better is what will go on.

I also can size up to 205 55 15.

The tire companies I'm looking at are BF Goodrich, and Yokohama.

Those are the tires, in the 195 size. I'm using tirerack to show the pictures, but more than likely, I'll buy local.

I'd be looking at the same two companies if I size up to 205. Bridgestone Potenzas were a choice, but I've rolled them (no pun intended) out (and I know it's ruled).

I'm not closed on those two brands, so let me know if you think of something else.

Another company I was considering was Toyo. I've got 17 inch rims with Toyo Proxes 4's on them, and I like them a lot. I just didn't see anything in Toyo's models, that I would want for just normal driving.

Thanks!

Re: Hey car guys, question on tires.

I prefer the BF Goodrich myself. I cant say the Yokohoma are bad, but, I do know the Goodrich's always held up well and gave good year-round traction. However, my experience with tires like Yoko and Toyo ( I have Toyos on my wifes Cobalt with 18" wheels) are this: That big block of rubber running through the center of the tread may be nice for dry roads and help push water out, but, those type of tires REALLY suck for snow. There is no grooving there and since that is the main contact point, it is almost like having slicks on your car. This effect is even multiplied when you run a larger ( wider ) tire. Because the weight of the vehicle is dispersed across a wider foot print, it does not allow the tire to "bite" through the snow ,rather, it allows to to stay on top and spin more easily. Keep your weather conditions in mind when buying something like a tire.-Lou

IMHO, Michelins are way overrated. In my experience, they're great tires for about a year. And then with just modest wear, they start sucking large moose wang. Happened on both my car and my wife's old SUV. Don't think I'll ever buy that brand again.

I swapped out the stock Michelins on my Mazda6 for these Bridgestones:

I couldn't be more pleased. Dry handling feels just about as good as the Michelins - maybe just a hair worse, but barely noticable for most people. But wet and snow handling are A LOT better!!! And they've been wearing well so far, too. Highly recommended.

Actually Hankooks are extremely good tires. A lot of bang for the buck in my opinion.

I've had both Yokohamas and BF Goodrich on my Mustang, and for some reason the rear tires would always spin really badly, and leave black lines behind me.

I don't know if this is true, but I've been told that Michelin and BF Goodrich are made by the same company. It's all marketing...

I've always preferred BF Goodrich. Our Honda Pilot has Bridgestones that are supposed to be really good tires, but I don't think I'm going to get 30,000 miles out of them (and I do rotate).

Shitty tire... had them on my Eclipse.
They have almost zero traction on wet pavement.
I'm now running BFG Comp T/A's and the thing corners like it's on rails.
The softer compound tire will give you better traction, but they will wear out faster.
Yokohama's are great tires, but I think they are a tad pricey.

Re: Hey car guys, question on tires.

Having worked in the tire industry for a number of years if you want a GREAT passenger car tire then Michelin is tops. Michelin's quality control is what all companies should strive to achieve--they have it down to a science. I have seen literally thousands of tires and every type of tire failure you can imagine. I've owned every brand of tire (nearly ...wouldn't ever buy a Kelly or the like) and have spent up to $400.00 on one tire (285/35/18 Bridgestone S02's).

If you want a "good" affordable tire then you can look at some of the offerings from BFGoodrich (in your size stay FAR away from the Traction T/A's however) and Yokohama. Goodyears are PURE junk (with the exception of their new triple tread/assurance line) I've seen more out-of-round/runout conditions from goodyear than ANY other manufacturer.

Bottom line.... if you want problem free performance and traction stay with Michelin. The Pilot XGTH4 will wear really quickly so I suggest the Energy MXV4+. On that note I also discourage you from purchasing from Tirerack. One of your local shops would probably be more than happy to meet or beat Tirerack's price and **should** you have anything go wrong you don't have to deal with shipping it back (any "dealer" should take care of the problem but this is rarely the case).
