    Re: doctors or bullshittters? rant

I hope to be a student in medecine in the future. I understand that there are a lot of bullshiters. Some of them only went there for the $$ and now they saw that it was not very worth it (its a lot of work too). But you have to say that they cannot be 100% efficient but i recognize that if you saw multiple doctors and they couldn't diagnotise and find what you had is fishy. Maybe they aren't interested to look carefully and are more interessted to see more ppl to have they paycheck bigger.

As for socialized medecine, it only works very well in scandinavia... here in Canada (quebec in particular) there are long queues in the emergency and its pretty freaky when you get told that you must wait at least 6 months to start the treatment. As of now, they are legalizing (? ) private clinics for special treatments where ppl would have to wait incredible time.

      [ QUOTE ]
I am one of the great uninsured masses here in the US. I am whistling past the graveyard but the steps I am taking are simple: getting exercise to reduce excess weight, washing hands frequently and thoroughly, reducing dangerous pastimes (motorcycling, some sports, staying inside at nighttime and during rainy times).

      [/ QUOTE ]

We do the same thing. For a self employed family, health insurance just isn't affordable. The kids do qualify for medicaid and wic, but the wife and I have nothing. If either of us becomes seriously ill, we're screwed. I broke my ankle a couple of years ago in a bike accident, and it cost us over 3K. I spent MAYBE 4 hours total at the ER and doctors office. By my calculator that's over $750.00 per hour. (how much could that cast and a couple of x-rays cost?) It's robbery and nothing less.
My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

        HMO Q & A

        Q. What does HMO stand for?
        A. This is actually a variation of the phrase, 'Hey, Moe!' Its roots go back to a concept pioneered by Dr. Moe Howard of "The Three Stooges " who discovered that a patient could be made to forget about the pain in his foot if he was poked hard enough in the eyes.

        Q. I just joined an HMO. How difficult will it be to choose the doctor I want?
        A. Just slightly more difficult than choosing your parents. Your insurer will provide you with a book listing all the doctors who were participating in the plan. These doctors basically fall into two categories those who are no longer accepting new patients, and those who will see you but are no longer part of the plan. But don't worry, the remaining doctor who is still in the plan and accepting new patients has an office just a ha lf-day's drive away and that diploma from a small Caribbean Island is very fresh.

        Q. Do all diagnostic procedures require pre-certification?
        A. No. Only those you need.

        Q. What are preexisting conditions?
        A. This is a term used by the grammatically challenged when they want to talk about existing conditions. Unfortunately, we appear to be pre-stuck with 'pre and now' meaning the same.

        Q. Can I get coverage for my preexisting conditions?
        A. Certainly, as long as they don't require any treatment.

        Q. What happens if I want to try alternative forms of medicine?
        A. You'll need to find alternative forms of payment.

        Q. My pharmacy plan only covers generic drugs, but I need the name brand. I tried the generic edication, but it gave me a stomach ache. What should I do?
        A. Poke yourself in the eye.

        Q. What if I'm away from home and I get sick?
        A. You really shouldn't do that.

        Q. I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he can handle my problem. Can a general practitioner really perform a heart transplant right in his office?
        A. Hard to say, but considering that all you're risking is the $20 CO-payment, there is no harm giving him a shot at it.

        Q. Will health care be any different in the next century?
        A. No. But if you call right now, you might get an appointment by then.
