Thanks for all the suggetions guys. Now I have plenty to work with.

And Bill, Thats actually a good suggestion. I may not get a double kick pedal up front, but I'll get one soon after.

"Get a set of ear plugs and build a sound proof room too.
Thats my suggestion".

Not a bad idea either John. I bet I'm going to regret this!

It'll be worth it if he sticks with it. I played guitar and my brother played drums. My parents lived!

[/ QUOTE ]

Get him a used electronic set. This way you won't have to be punished. A drummers parents realy should be rewarded with some kind of trophy or royalties if their kid makes it big. Its a huge committment for the parents. Kind of like the ice hockey of musical instruments. I couldn't imagine having a 7 year old drummer with his own set in our house.
Like I said... sound proof room or better yet.. sound proofed garage. Its cool that he wants to learn but to put it in perspective, I would think 99% of 7 year old boys want to play the drums. Its up to us to give them a guitar and a headphone amp instead!!

....John G that is so true man..!!

I have to endure this noise every now and then..oh boy..

I just remeber how I felt when my dad told me to "shut the fuck up" when I really wanted to practice..I find myself wanting to say that on occassion (you will too)...but I think back..how I felt..so I just close the door and let him play..

Then..

I remeber how good it felt when my dad said out of the blue.."wow, you're getting pretty good"..I will always remembered that, as small as that was..and that really encouraged me !!

Bill, once again you hit it on the head. My Dad had nothing to do with my brother getting a drum set. It was my sister and Mothers idea. He wasn't allowed to play when my Dad was home.

I never want to hold my kids back. With Ben, it's more than just any 7 year old wanting to play drums for the hell of it. He really wants to do this. Believe me, We don't shell out this kind of cash on birthdays or even Christmas. And for his birhtday, Sam will get the Epi Camo bullseye. He's been after me for a "real" guitar. If the 357 turned out to be a scam, I would probably pick him up a mexi strat or something similar.

As far as the electronic kits, I wouldn't be opposed, but arent' they really expensive? I looked at a few and man...

...electric drums ..well you could buy them reasonably I guess..and they do have the luxury to practice "silently"

I'd get him a standard kit..something to build on with time..and it just looks and sound better.....it's part of the "fun" of drums..IMO

Just throw a blanket over them and close the door when the "noise" starts to grate on you..

Yeah I bought Vin a kiddie 100 dollar set..he just jumped aboard and went nuts, he had "natural" meter..so the next year I got him the Sonor..after doing some homework of best bang for the buck..I liked what Sonor had in the price range..they sound GREAT!

which makes it all the better when your jammin' with him..and waite to you see how you feel when you do..your going to smile ear to ear...and he's gonna pick up on that!

Sometimes , I'm kinda "hard" on him if he can't do a certain part at times..I have to remind myself he's just my kid and not a "bandmate"..although he can be in no time..if he continues the way he's going..

If I'm good enough to play for him by then..

nothing wrong with an acoustic set imo. no worse than a kid butchering songs on a piano. closing the door works fine. also, get him those split sticks. they look like wooden brushes. they're a lot quieter.

Re: drumset for a 7 year old?

electric drums are well... crap.... specially for the beginner.
you have to get the right feel. All the rolls, paradiddles, rudiments etc. make different sounds and stuff, it all comes from the feel. But when you play with electric drums, they are triggered samples, you can't have all these different sounds. Practice pads are way better.

Another thing is the cymbals, you can get a way with cheap drums but the sound of the cheap cymbals will gonna piss you off if you hear them every day. They are not musical, they are just pieces of brass. Zildjian makes the worst low end cymbals, they don't obey any rules when they make them. Keep away from companies like Stagg. Sabians are better than Zildjian. Paiste is the best. I would recommend the 201 series, they are by far the best cymbals for starters. 101 series are a little bit cheaper but ten times crappier.

I swear by the Sabians B8s series..they sell the whole package..the hi-hats/Ride/Crash/splash, that's all he'll need for now....and they sound like they "should" to my ears..it's a good value...I think!

they held up to my kids fours years of bashing on them with no probs!

Re: drumset for a 7 year old?

Alright, ditch the electronic set idea!

Here's what I'm lookng at.....

Tama Stagestar - 18 inch kick, 10 and 12 mounted toms, 14 floor tom and a 13 inch steel snare includes all hardware, hi hats, rock/crash and throne. Probably shitty symbals.

CB Drums CB5QLX - 22 inch bass drum 12 and 13 inch mounted toms 16 floor tom all hardware, 14 hi hats 16 inch crash/ride. Again, shitty cymbals.

Yamaha Rydeen - 22 inch kick 12 and 13 mounted toms and a 16 floor tom, all hardware, no throne, not cymbals.

I really like the Rydeen, but it's about 100 more than the others and no cymbals so I'm looking at about 300 more than the others.

I'm thinking the Tama may be the way to go. it's a little smaller so it won't take up as much room and I could buy a cymbal set a little bit down the road.

We'll see.

Re: drumset for a 7 year old?

Jim have yiou checked the Sonor stuff..my kid has the "Force 2001" series in matte black with 22" kick..and it came with the Sabians..I know a few local drummers that play the exact same kit..they love 'em..I really like the matte black..!!

You can't go wrong with Yamaha, Pearl or Tama either..I dunno bout the CB..I'd pass on that one.

A Tama Swiongstar is great ..they go cheap used ....just replace the heads if need be...my old drummer had a set of Rockstars and pewter finished swingstar...I could have bought a 5pc. swingstar for 400 dolars but all the heads were shot..with tape on them..so I just got the new Sonor kit instead..it's new and purdy! Force 2001 is discontinued. How about the Force 1003?

Sure..that should be fine..they are shiny now..the ones before that cost a smidge more and came in Matte finishes..but they are made the same..so sure!

Oh especially if they come with the basic Sabian pack!!
