  • Cheap Dell OK?

I may need to replace my stupid PC here, anybody want to comment on the low line Dells? I keep seeing the B110 advertised:

Upgrade the RAM, download openoffice and use the reinstall CD to get rid of the preinstalled crapware.
You got a hell of a deal on a websurfing machine after that, just don't expect to play any recent games with it.

    Websurf OK
    Office Apps OK
    Email OK
    MP3 playback OK

No DVD player/burner and crap graphics with a semi weak proc mean that it won't kick ass, but will offer a decent value.

Yah, you'll want a MIN of 512MB of memory. Other than that it'll work fine

Guys, I'm getting frustrated...I'm wanting to use a coupon for this but I found this page:

        http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/p...s=dhs&~lt=popup

But I don't find a link, and it won't accept the DB110PRF1 in the evalue box.

How do I go aboutr getting that $200 off (the first discount) on a B110?

          Ron,

Have you tried calling them? Sometimes those help desk/sales types can authorize deals like that. Worked when I got my Gateway laptop. I have heard of Dell doing similiar things.

My sister also gave me this webpage with a really good deal on Dell. I think the original thing she sent me expired, but it still has some good deals and offers

                Re: Cheap Dell OK?

Dell has probably the best deals on a new system.

Cheap? there are alot of nice cheap computer deals on eBay.
There are also a ton of used pentium 3 Dell and Gateways office surplus on there. Everyone is upgrading to a pent 4, M or D and whatever else is out now. I spent a whopping 60.00 from a local dealer for a Gateway desktop last fall; 950mhz pent 3 processor, 12gb HD, 384mb ram, built in ethernet a keyboard and mouse. It had Windows 2000 COA on machine and they supplied a restore disk. After install, I was up and running. (with a few glitches but they were rectifiable) A few upgrades and I have a really decent system. I gave it away to a friend whose system just cacked.

250.00 will get you a nice used Dell Optiplex, Pent 4 system, 2gb processor and 256-512mb ram, 20-30gb HD
..for that price you should be able to find one with Windows 2000 loaded...maybe even XP.

I'm running a 70.00 system with a Pent 3 700 mhz that came loaded with a legit version of XP pro. It gets me by until I decide where I want to go next. Granted, it has no warranty, but..for the $, if it crashed and burned.. I'm not out alot. I've had pretty good luck with used office systems off ebay from select sellers where I can get a local pickup for no charge. They usually will cover the system with a warranty for 30 days. Some even offer a service plan.

                  Re: Cheap Dell OK?

Save your money, dude. Build your own. You get exactly what you want and can build a much better system than anything Dell can slap together.

Those cheap machines are used/refurbished and you WILL get what you pay for... A cheap machine.

It looks as tho you may have to be signed in so you can choose your coupons? I tried too, but it wouldn't accept it but I was not signed on. After going through some of the add ons, I came up with a pretty basic 110 system running around 670.00 before rebates and discounts.

I paid about 1500 for a HP new in '98.. two years later it was already becoming outdated and I could get a pent 3 twice as fast for half the price new.
I would be ok trying my hand at building a system now with some reference books and maybe some outside help..back then, no way. Building your own can be a good way to go but not everyone has the means or a friend with the time to put it together for them if they can't tackle it themselves.

                      Re: Cheap Dell OK?

you may want to hold off or like someone suggested, have one built. By january, you dell deal will be outdated. There is a new OS coming out in Jan. by MS called Vista. There are system requirements to get the most out of it.
                      check it out:
                      VISTA

You don't have to build for it even though you would save money and time in the long run. Systems are going to come out soon that are Vista Compliance if you wait and should include the new OS or discount coupons when it comes out. BUT... It is a good time plan ahead ....

nah, vista is delayed big time.

ron, that's a good pc for the price. i used to build my own, but it's always more expensive than what dell can do. i'd upgrade the monitor to 17" LCD. Dell's branded LCDs are always priced well. If you're going to do some work apart from surfing and email, then I'd upgrade the memory to 512.
