  • Today's shipping factoid

So I'm at the post office this afternoon getting ready to send a guitar across the counrty via Priority Mail insured for $2,500 when the clerk asks if I'd like to send it via registered mail instead. I ask why registered would be better and the clerk informs me that it's much cheaper that way ... and it was, about $18 bucks cheaper. The breakpoint where the cost of registered mail + insurance thereon becomes cheaper than the regular blue-tag postal insurance occurs when the valuation of the shipped item exceeds about $1,000.

The clerk also informed me that they're far more careful with registered packages becuase if it was smashed or lost along the way to its destination there was a some chance that the responsible carrier might lose their job whereas there's no chance of that happening with any other type of delivery. I had no idea and I've been shipping guitars for the better part of 20 years.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I had no clue either, and I've been doing shipping for like 3 years

That's great info, thanks! BTW, how is the delivery timeframe affected, if at all?

        Re: Today\'s shipping factoid

Delivery times aren't affected at all. You still pay for and use the normal Parcel Post / Priority Mail / Express Mail delivery options but instead of doing the blue tag for regular postal insurance ($2.35 + $1.05 per every $100 above $100) either the green for delivery confirmation ($0.60) or pink for signature confirmation ($1.90) you use the little white registered mail slips for registered service & insurance ($7.90 + insurance fee). In my case $2,500 in insurance added $4.15 to the base $7.90 charge for a total of $12.15 for the registered service & insurance whereas normal blue tag insurance + signature confirmation would have added almost $30.

The only thing I don't like about the usps is their tracking is not nearly as good as the other shippers,

I don't like how I was using the USPS to ship guitars all the time with no problems, then my local Post Office got all new clerks and they won't ship any guitars at all, even though I've been doing it all along. Now I use UPS or Fedex

What do you mean they won't ship them???
                    It's not a banned item.
They may not want to package them for you for insurance reasons, but if you bag it and tag it properly, they'll ship it.

The USPS uses fedex and ups to ship "some" of thier packages according to the postmaster I deal with.

Ron it was a fairly heavy package. CA --> MD via registered Priority Mail was ~$59, it would have been ~$78 Priority Mail w/signature confirmation & regular postal insurance.
