I just sold an axe on Fleabay. The winning bidder sniped it in the last seconds. (As usual.) However, they've been a member on Ebay only a few weeks and only have 1 feedback. I smell a scammer, and would prefer to cancel the bid and sell to the runner up. Can this be done?

Re: Ebay Help - Cancel Winning Bidder?
Sorry guys, this is exactly how I was scammed before. New Ebayer (2 weeks!), and they've only got 1 feedback. The dude was using a stolen credit card and, as soon as the REAL CC owner got his next statement, the payment was contested. I'd rather not take the chance - I'll even take the neg. feedback rather than risk it.
Quite frankly, this is the biggest scam routine going on Ebay. (...Creating new accounts and using stolen CC #s to buy high bucks items.) And they do almost nothing about it until it's too late.

How do you smell a scammer when the auction just ended? If you don't have a "pay right away" disclosure in your auction, then give him 7 days to pay. Contact him and find out what the deal is. If he doesn't pay within a week, then file a complaint and see if the runner up wants it.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

Paranoid is someone who is overreacting to something with no basis in reality. Since I've been scammed EXACTLY like this before, I'm being cautious.
If I could have, I would have taken the precaution to cancel the newbie's bid before the auction ended. F'n Ebay doesn't allow for that, though. And, yes, I've got my preferences set up to block bids as best I can. Unfortunately, these types of scams aren't addressed with Ebay's options.
I'd love to block bidders who've been members less than 6 months and have, say, less than 10 feedbacks. Will I lose bids? Possibly. But I'd gladly accept that. Fleabay won't give us those choices, though, because that means less business for them.

Re: Ebay Help - Cancel Winning Bidder?
A lot of people say in their ads bidders without "X"amount of feedback must contact seller before bidding, for future ads,Has he paid already by Creditcard. if so hold the guitar until you can be certain it is legit, contact the CC company to make sure. If the buyer protests let him know why. or have him send you Postal MO or if over 1000 bucks a couple MOs and cash em at thr post office to be sure they aren't phonies.I say the boy ain't right!

I thought you could block bidders with less than *blank* feedbacks. Can you not do that anymore? You could also set it up so that they have to pay with Paypal and that the shipping address and paypal account have to be verified. That might help ease your mind a bit, maybe? Good luck either way.

I've done this in the past, but it's pretty much useless becase Ebay won't honor it. In fact, if you refuse to sell to someone that doesn't meet your requirements stated in the auction, Ebay might even freeze your account for non-performance. So, it doesn't matter what you say. Ebay may hold you to going through with the sale, anyway.

No. You can only block bidders with X number of negative feedbacks. You can't block newbies with little or no feedback. And I've already done the rest. Yes, that offers some protection. But if the payment gets contested later because it was done with a stolen CC, you have to go through the hassle of invoking Paypal's seller protection policy. Because, by then, you've already shipped the item and ain't getting it back. So your money gets locked up until Paypal (owned by Ebay) and the CC company investigate. And, all the while, they're also looking for every little stupid reason to refuse your SPP claim, so that they don't have to pay. ...Just like UPS' shipping insurance. Re: Ebay Help - Cancel Winning Bidder?
I had a newbie from Canada hit the BIN on an auction where I'd specified that I'd ship to USA lower 48 only, and that anyone with less than 5 positives needed to contact me before bidding or I'd cancel their bid. I immediately filed a NPB and cited that I didn't ship to her country. Because of that I was able to get my FV fee refunded and relist for free. That wouldn't apply in your case, I guess, but you have to have 3 non-performs in 30 days to get tossed from Ebay, if that's any comfort.Ron is the MAN!!!!

Re: Ebay Help - Cancel Winning Bidder?
Update: I got the contact info. from Ebay. It's a female. While not impossible, you don't often see women buying guitars. (...Apologies in advance to the ladies here on the JCF - but that's true!) So that makes me slightly suspicious.
Then I called her phone number to try to talk. No answer and no answering machine.
So then - with on-line searches - I've tried to confirm that phone # and contact person. The phone number is not listed in any on-line directories that I've tried (several of them). Tried looking her up by the person's name. Nothing that way either.
Red flags all the way. Man, this is really feeling like a scammer now.

Re: Ebay Help - Cancel Winning Bidder?
Contacting the CC company from a PayPal sale is not possible. You would need the first 6 digits of the credit card and you don't get that info from PayPal.
Just because the user is new doesn't mean he is a scammer. Make sure you ship to only the veified address provided by PayPal. If you don't have it setup that way, go into your PayPal account and require users to provide a verified shipping address.
