Another Fan observation...

Here is something else I have noticed throughout the years regarding fans.
When we play a popular cover you can see mostly everybody in the crowd singing along to every word of the song. They all know every word. Every gig you will get a few fans who are 1 step from jumping up on stage and singing the songs. So... what do you do... you give them a chance and tell them to come up and sing into the mic. THEY FORGET EVERYTHING AND THEY SING COMPLETELY OUT OF TUNE AND THEY DON'T EVEN SING THE SONG IN THE RIGHT TIMING.
Now when they were in the crowd you could hear them a little and they are pretty much nailing everything. Sometimes even better than your actual singer! Put them up on stage and they completely blank out.
Whats up with that?
How about the guitar players in the crowd who you KNOW CAN PLAY and know the songs you are doing but when they come up on stage they FORGET JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING!

That's why I usually blame it on the bar or the band and say that it's just policy not too, because if one person does it, then everyone else in here wants to and the bar gets annoyed because they are paying a cover band, not a kareoke band.
If they get pissed, screw 'em they're probably drunk and won't remember in the morning anyway.

stage fright too....it's one thing to belt it out on your own and another to get up on the stage and suddenly realize EVRYONE is watching you!!!! adrenaline kicks in and your brain goes into survival mode...they are off time because their senses have slowed down in order for their heart rates to regulate, etc....they go off key becuase they are no longer focused on the song but the reality that they are on stage!

My rule of thumb is nobody is allowed onstage when we play or take a break period-As for a killer (friend) guitarist or singer-If we do get them up we will introduce them from so-and-so band. I had drunks come up and fall into my amps-This new guy on the scene (guitarist) started playing spinning around drunk (he sucked sober) and dropped my les paul broke the head stock and all he said was wow that sucks dude!! So as a solid rule if you come up onstage I will ask you once-Hey sorry you are not supposed to be up here-If they ignore me then I will escort them off myself.

Exactly. John, you should know this. I'm the guitarist who plays good by himself LOL! If someone come in the room (wife, kids), I start getting nervous and F' up. But with time I get better at handling it.

It's funny, I wasn't always so self concious (sp?). I'd go into a GC, play Iron Man, and the teens wanted to sign me (a 40 year old) up with their band LOL! But now I'm a little more timid - I don't know why. Maybe as I get a better ear, I'm more concious of F' ups.

I always had that rule too Tony but lately we have been trying anything to get the crowd to get more into it and stay.
