I disagree and agree with you. OPEC " aka the Saudis" can flood the market with oil if they want. Iran will keep pumping and the rest have a vested interest in not killing the "Oily Goose" I really don't think the "Oilers" will throw the world into a recession. It's not in their best interest.

I agree with the analysis but not one of your necessary premises, namely that the Saudis are still capable of flooding the market. They claim they can and they claim they're willing but they've not done so at any point in time over the last couple of years. Even if they did tanker traffic on the Atlantic is running near 100% capacity and there's no shipbuilding boom underway so getting that alleged marginal supply from the Middle East to markets in the US or Europe where it could bring prices down is going to be a bit difficult. And if we were to get it here our refineries are already operating at near capacity and thanks to environmental regulation (mostly) we've not built a new one in the US in the last couple of decades. Refining it overseas doubles down on the tanker shortage. Like I said, it's a problem of pure supply & demand but the supplies and demands aren't just for crude, they're for crude, refining capacity, transportation infrastructure, etc. Given that oil has always been a boom/bust industry there's a lot of caution at throwing enough money at those issues to make a difference as everyone firmly expects prices to tank in the next couple of years. Plenty of issues to go around there.

Re: ethanol. It's a subsidy for famers and absolutely nothing more and I say that as the son of a farmer who depends party on raising corn to make a living. The energy budget just doesn't work: you have to burn an amount of energy equivalent to 1.3 gallons of ethanol in order to produce 1 gallon of ethanol. See a problem there?

The oil there and it will get here. They will see to it. As for ethanol, Brazil has been using methanol, same thing pretty much, for years. There's is just distilled sugar. Hell, we can do that. We got sugar beets coming out of the whazzoo. The bottom line is: if and when demand drops whether by comsumer choice or a recession the price will come down. Years ago, oil topped $30/brl. And 2 years later it was down to $10. There are lots of stats I have heard and the impact of oil on prices and the economy is nowhere near what it was then. Keep the faith, Baby.

US farmers and cattle ranchers have been there doing it for years. I believe the time is comming that we really wish we had supported our food producing heartland better. We've all just had a hand in letting government and big business break it off in their ass. And there is no smilie to convey how I feel about this.

Okay, I think I've got the maths right.

Unleaded is about 90 pence per litre here.
That works out to £4.10 per gallon.
Now, AFAIK £1 equals $1.75, or thereabouts.
Soooo, we're paying around $7.17 a gallon!

All I know is the premium gas which I require will be near 4 bucks a gallon this Summer...that BLOWS no matter how ya slice it!

Since I live in a seasonal area..WTF does gas prices have to do with the weather..it rains the gas is cheaper..if it's a nice day it's ridiculous..so now we have to play the gas / weather game..it's always a game..

it always expensive when people like to travel, holidays, weekends..that just plain gouging ass!

best time to get your tank filled is a rainy wed or tues ..early afternoon when everyone is at work..they bump it up right before rush hour..

$3/ gallon is still cheap. In Japan, it's $5.

In Germany it´s about a buck fifty a quart (standard unleaded), so about 6$ a gallon
