Hmm... just my luck to be getting my license in a few months during the time that gas prices are shitting on everyone...

You guys can't ignore supply & demand though. It's no conspiracy theory that both China & India have huge populations that will increasingly take larger shares of available crude every year.

I have done lots of research into bio-diesel and vegetable oil. It's a win-win situation in the areas of emissions, foreign non-dependency, US agriculture, and engine power. Long term:

      1. Detroit needs to do more R&D into diesel technology
      2. Farmers need to grow more oil-producing plants such as soybeans
      2. Fueling infrastructure

IMO this will be easier & less expensive than hydrogen technology

There's also a movement to create a gasoline alternative from composting, but the veg oil alternative is available now.

Actually, I mean no insult for those of you who choose to drive whatever vehicle is your choice and want to pay it at the pump. I worked with a guy who drove a huge extended cab truck just because he didn't ever want to drive a car again (altho, I won't get into this guys personality but he wasn't a big guy)

I think there's probably alot of people who drive what they drive because it suits them.. personally..I'm one that is willing to compromise instead of pay thru the nose. I'd love to own the new mustang but not for a commuter.

I was looking at the stats yesterday.. we use over 20 million barrels a day, yet we produce less than 5 million a day.. so we import over 60%. In fact according to Gibson Consulting..we are at the lowest production levels in 50 years. Even at peak US production which was in the 1970's we could not produce more than 40% total output in the world.

Since I started driving, I have always had a truck or an SUV. We have three boys that play multiple sports and I play out so we need something thats roomy. I'm 6'4" and there is no way I'm sqeezing into a tiny hybrid for my 2 hours of commuting each day. I'm not going to get a smaller car to make someone else happy. I hate hearing the "it's the people who drive SUVs" bullshit.

I'm not happy about gas prices, but what can I do? We could squeeze into tiny cars, but I'm not willing to do that and I'm not willing to have my family do that either. We all have our own priorities. I may not like it, but I'll pay the $3 or $4 per gallon. Bill nailed it. They have us by the shorties.

Thats why I won't bitch about it.
It's none of my business, but do you really believe that you need 16 cylinders and a total of 10+ litres of engine volume, just to transport yourself and your 3 kids? Honestly, that is more than what you find in an average truck/trailer over here. No one should tell you what to spend your money on, but I think its insane

I have a friend who drives a Ford F350 Crew cab. He is married with no children, he doesn't tow anything and he doesn't use it for business. I have another friend who has an Excursion, a 30th anniversary Cobra and a souped up Mustang 5.0. Same thing applies. Our other friends just bought an Expedition and another bought an Escalade because the prices were so low on them. Niether of them need a truck for any reason. Thats what I am talking about. 6'4" guys like you with an active growing family need big vehicles. Your the ones who are getting screwed at the pump because you have no choice. The people who don't care and are charging all of their gas so they can eventually file for bankrupcy when they can't pay their car payments or charge card dept are the ones who are screwing all of us.
I hear ya John. It's all good. I actually wasn't aimimg this at anyone here. I just hear it alot and while it does carry some merrit, it doesn't apply to everyone.

In my last venture of looking at cars (the last couple of weeks) I looked at civics and other smaller cars and considered getting something along those lines, but it just was not going to work for me. Plus it renders that car only good for commuting and nothing else. I just can't see spending the money on something that will be used only to get back and forth to work.

I actually almost got a 2006 Dodge Magnum with a Hemi. Believe it or not, it got better gas milage than my 97 grand cherokee (4.0 liter straight 6). I averaged 18 in the Jeep and I would probably get around 20/21 (they claim 25) in the Magnum. The only reason I passed was that it was a rear wheel drive only model and as much as the salesman argued, that would suck ass in the snow. I thought about getting a new one with all wheel drive, but then the mpg goes out the window. I should get 17/18 mpg in the new grand cherokee. Thats not too shabby considering it's an SUV with V8.

This is one big shit sandwich and everyone has to take a bite.

I say fuggem where it hurts. Alternative fuels is the way to go.

BTW it's $3.11 at the corner today but $3.25 average in my county

Gas sucks. Right now in my 81 Caddy with an Olds 350, I get like 14 per gallon. I'm spending like At least $40 a week

3 years ago In my old Dodge Truck I was getting 4 Mpg, When gas was like $1.45 I was dropping a Bill a week easy
