I always thought Carlin was the best.

Lately, I've been liking Mitch Hedberg (RIP)

Robin Williams is my all time favorite comedian. Even when he's just doing an interview on the Tonight Show or the Inside the Actors Studio he still kills me even. His improv is hands down my favorite.

Ron White is also one of my favorites. Nothing like a being a drunk, obnoxious, don't give a fuck redneck. Kathy Griffin is funny as hell too! Her standup on Life on the D List is funny as hell too!

Bill Hicks!!! - R.I.P. Kinda sad though,he made alot of jokes about the one thing that did finally kill him,and even though he knew he was going to die he still went out and did the club scene.

Rich Jeni back in the Platypus Man era,and Izzard are big favs of mine.
Rodney was KING! Sad to see him go.

Carlin and Hicks are good for the car as they are/were mostly audio based jokes and didn't need any visual queues.

Clay? Aint he that Ford Fairlane guy?

                      > One of my faves is Stephen Wright, man that guy gets twisted ideas. Anyone that hasn't seen or heard him,he was "the guy on the couch" in Half-Baked. Wicker Chairs And Gravity is just awesome. I also agree with everyone mentioned here with the possible exception of Ron White,I can only take him in small doses. Any Larry The Cable Guy is TOO much,I'd like to hit him in the mouth. Eddie Izzard's Dress To Kill is one of the funniest things ever to me as well. But to be honest,my personal pick as the funniest guy I've ever seen is Sasha Baron Cohen, especially in the Ali G mode, even though he's not standup. I'd also like to throw in the Kings Of Comedy DVD as well. Tommy D.

Anybody have the HBO specials Billy did in the early 90's?
He seems to have fallen off the radar.

+1 Early Robin Williams - when he did dirty stuff in his stand-up - was fuckin' hilarious. He's a freakin' improv master.

And another +1 for Dangerfield. RIP Rodney.
