    weird motorcycle engine question...

    howdy....

    Question for any of you mechanics. What should I be looking at when I have this issue...


    Bike runs good, starts very easily and idles fine off the bat. After 10 minutes of riding or so and once things get warmed up, it doesnt want to idle, and it will just die unless you give it gas. What areas should I look into first when dealing with this? Im a motor n00b and this kind of stuff isnt in the manual, but I would like to do it myself.

    Any help is appreciated!

          Sounds like you might be running too rich. That would explain why it starts right up at first. When the bike gets warmer it starts to get choked out due to the air/gas mixture being too rich is what I would guess. Had the bike been sitting for a while? If so you might need to clean the carbs and replace the air filter and possibly adjust the mix. There should be an adjustment for idle and one for mix. Mess around with those after the bike is warm and see it you can get it to run/idle better.
          If not check the fuel line including the petcock (gas lever) and the screen inside the tank, one of those night be clogged. Had a problem with a Harley of mine once where the coating inside the tank peeled off and was clogging the screen inside the tank. Good luck

            be careful of getting to lean tho.. it'll heat up fast and damage rings, pistons.. do everything gradually.

              thanks guys, after doing some googling sounds like you all have the right idea. I'll start taking off the carbs now, as I can smell the gas mixture and it does seem to be rich!!!

                The "Rich" term comes from the mixture of gas and air as it enters the motor when the engine is running. Rich would state that there is too much gas ....lean states there is more air....There is no way to tell if the mix is rich by smelling the gas LOL....anyway let us know how you do
