  • VH1 is bullshit! :<

    hey people
not long ago i was bored so i turned on VH1 and they had "20 best heavy metal bands" .. u know.. name the band and give a 2 min info about it

    well.. how come..

    Pantera ended up last?
and how come ACDC ended up second? is ACDC heavy metal?
who ended up first on the list? Led Zeppelin!
eddie van halen too the 5th or 6th place i don't remember which also sucks

anyway its all about popularity .. everyone knows ACDC and Led Zeppelin..
don't get me wrong these bands are great but HEAVY METAL??

    VH1 SUCKS
If the crowd is shouting for an encore, but the sound guy is shaking his head, ignore him and play anyway

Ah yes and Sabbath was 2nd....and yeah they were considered Heavy Metal when the term was first used. Matter of Fact I think Sabbath was the first band ever to be called heavy metal...you must be a young-un

Without Zep and Sabbath, no metal. I'd put Sabbath at the top, but Zep is quite instrumental as well.

Sorry, IMO Zep is mostly "not metal". I think I could count on my fingers (one handed) which songs of theirs I'd consider metal.

For those who don't have VH1C, last night was the top 40 Metal Songs of all time. Sabbath place first with Iron Man. Just like any of these shows, there were some "questionable" calls. Faith No More on the list? Bring on the Noize a top 40 all time? Oh, and not a single Led Zep song on the list LOL!

Ah but that's where you are wrong ..all those early bands are the grandfathers of current metal..without those bands there is no metal ..

Yeah right? Think of all the Faggy hair bands in the 80's that were called metal?

Zep and Sabbath spawned metal. Without Iomi's massive riffage and Bonham's huge crashing drums, you never would have had metal.

Faith No More belonged on the top 40 metal tunes. Do you have that record? It is pretty massive and full of true metal riffage. Epic was a revoluntionary song and brought a funk/metal/rap style into the forefront....bands like Faith No More and Fishbone layed the foundation for '90s style Metal, which sucked, but was still considered metal.

Faith No More's cover of WarPigs on the Epic record is killer.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

The term Heavy Metal covers a lot of ground.

Watch the cartoon "Heavy Metal". The music in that movie was considered Heavy Metal at the time.

Zeppelin tops the "hard rock" band list.

now speaking of top 40 countdowns, did you see the top 40 heavy metal songs of all time? that had some questionable choices oh well, at least VH1 is having a metal month.

Sorry Mike, I'll take the real War Pigs from Sabbath any day. Faith No More is a fusion of funk, metal and rap, but to a pure metal head like myself, it just does not do anything for me. Same with Anthax's Bring on the Noize with Public Enemy. I wouldn't put either of these in a Metal top 40 countdown.

But this top 40 list makes me wonder about bands that were passed up. None of Van Halen's stuff is metal or top 40 worthy? The Crue made it, but not Ratt.

I don't know. I think all of these "popularity contest" shows are a bunch of BS that are only good for sparking lots of debate.

Lists are always arbitrary and satisfy those who aren't even genre fans.

Zep was DEFINITELY proto-metal. Immigrant Song is metal. Black Dog is bluesy metal. Four Sticks is folk-metal. Misty Mountain Hop is pop-metal. Just because EVERY SONG wasn't metal doesn't mean they weren't hugely influential to the genre.

Kids today have very narrow definitions. Zep was the heaviest band of its time. Sabbath was equal in heaviness, but compared to Zep were one-dimensional. Zep had the ethereal psychedelic magic of later Beatles as well as the heavy Thor's hammer of metal. Sure it can sound dated 35 years later, 35 years of progression and refinement into more singular directions. Zep probably thought of themselves as a blues band and the old blues guys probably DIDN'T see them as blues either. But they WERE blues-based hard rock, which is the original basis of metal. Same basis as Sabbath. Purple introduced the neoclassical element. There of course people will dispute THAT, because Blackmore wasn't playing 6-string sweeps
or Paganini caprices. Still, it was the seed that grew the plant.

You young'uns will be trying to 'splain this shit to the kids 30 years from now, and they will be contemptuous too. It's one of God's tricks on the human race!
