Listen to Rocka-Rola by Judas Priest released in 1974
Listen to Lonesome Crow by The Scorpions released 1972

That is what heavy metal sounded like in the early 70's before the term was even widely used. Zep was even heavier at the time.
I think Sabbath's first album was released in the US around 1970 although I recall it being available as an import as early as 1968.
Black Sabbath was so heavy at the time that most of us kids had to listen to it "undercover" from our parents who thought it was devil music.

Noboddy can write a tune like Zeppelin. Every song they wrote was incredible. Physical Graffitti is a desert island album . One that you would bring to one at least. zepIII is a joke, they're all great. It's a progression up the ladder, no robert johnson, no chuck berry, no jimi, no jimmy page, no Blackmore, no Schenker, no vanhalen, no Rhoads no warren and jake, no yngwie, no whoever else you like. It's the blues that started it all baby!!! I'm tellin' ya. And as for VH1, Eddie trunk can go play his fake guitar all day, who cares.

durning the 70's people called Zep, Purple, Hendrix etc. heavy metal. The definition is changed now. These days those bands are called hard rock or classic rock. Heavy metal is darker and has a constant palm muting on the lower strings. Black Sabbath is the heavy metal. Zep is the gretest hard rock band ever.

I believe the first "shred" was performed by Danny Cedrone who was the guitarist for Bill Haley and the Comets. The song was Rock Around the Clock. It was around 1955.

Van Halen is not metal either. Most of the '80s "hair" bands were not metal. They were hard rock.
