  • Alice in Chains w/ Phil Anselmo

I was just watching VH1 Classic and A concert called Heart and Friends was on. It's part of the Classic Concert Series. Alice in Chains came out and played Would? with Phil on vocals, sounded great. When they were done they dedicated it to Layne and Dime.
Don't forget the corn. It's nutritious, delicious, and ribbed for her pleasure.

It's coming on again at 10 EST tonight. The Alice In Chains thing was almost an hour into it.

W Duvall kicks ass with AIC, if they write new stuff that's the guy. just watched decades rock live (again). they could really put out some great tunes with that line up.

I heard a bootleg of the performance and they did two takes of Would, both of them were acceptable performances by the Alice In Chains folks, but both Anselmo performances were pretty bad. One of the recordings he just couldn't hit the harmonies of the song and was sucking horribly. The other one, that they used in the performance was pretty abysmal as well.

Watching the video now, you can clearly see that Anselmo is really concentrating and struggling to hit those notes. You can see him throughout the video with his finger pressed against his left ear and eyes closed, trying to sing. Anyone that has seen Pantera perform, or hell, any band that Phil is in, knows when he's in his element and comfortable and clearly at that performance he's not there. Perfectly fine when he's not singing, but the moment the vocals come up, he's standing still, eyes squeezed shut and that hand at his ear. During the harmony part with Cantrell he's waaaaaay back in the mix (or just singing really softly).

The part at the end.... LOL

Yeah. Phil was really trying hard. I watched it twice and the second time was when I noticed he was way back in the mix. I dont think it was a trainwreck but it was a bit of a struggle for him at times.

I thought it was excellent. I'm glad to see Phil is still hanging in there. Lotta demons inside that bros head...

Thanks alot for posting that link... yeah I heard the bootleg mp3s, but they were lousy quality clips!

Phil is one of my main inspirations... it doesn't get any better than him IMO! I'm SO looking forward to seeing Down in June!!

Phil isn't Layne, but I never expected that from him. I don't think he did an awful job. Good to see.

That sounded better than any time my old band played Would live. I really don't think Phil did such a bad job. Some dudes are just too tough on anyone that isn't the 'original', no matter how good it sounds.

I was the same way when I saw Ozzy on the Diary tour. No matter how good Brad Gillis played, it was pale in comparison to RR!

Hmmm... I saw that Heart thing on VH1 Classic this past weekend. First off, Heart was great. I think Ann Wilson has a great voice. The pre chorus and Chorus in that version of "Alone" gave me chills. Carrie Underwood sang it with her was very good too. Alice was good, but they are not the same without Layne.

As for Phil's performance, I didn't like it. He seemed off key through most of it. He kept cupping his ear though, so maybe there were sound issues. During the interview sessions, Phil looked high and incoherent.

I saw the show twice and I enjoyed it both times. Good stuff.

My favorite part was Carrie GivesMeWood's makeover!! No more country girl there...pure SLUT!

                              Yummy!

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.
