  • Jiffy Lube ripoff

Local news did a 3 month investigation on Jiffy Lubes* in the San Fernando Valley. Watch the videos:

    Part 2

Anybody use JiffyLube? Apparently it's a common practice to try to "pack" the bill and then don't do the extra services! D'oh!

*Jiffy Lube is a national oil change chain store, usually they charge $19.99

Not just Jiffy Lube. Years ago my girlfriend took her truck to have new brakes put on. $800 later she got her truck back.

They charged her for new drums, bearings and all that shit. Of course they didn't do any of that, just told her they did.

Yeah, these places are crooked as a hillbilly's smile. I go just for the oil change and nothing else. One time, they wanted to sell me an air filter. I knew I needed it.....so, I thought I would let them an extra buck or two and told them to change it. They tried to charge me $25.00 for an air filter that would cost me $2.99 at the auto parts store right next door. Told them to take it out....ripped his ass for trying to gouge me like that.....wrote a letter to the local newspaper and it was printed. After months of little to no service, it was shut down, bought by a friend and turned into a custom accessories store.-Lou

I can't wait to show that to my brother!!! He used to work for Jiffy Lube.

I love that audio clip, it's amazing how many people have NO clue when it comes to cars. I was a mechanic for along time and you see a whole lot of morons out there. I never did any of that shit though. I'd be seriously pissed if that happened to me!

Yeah, I use Jiffy Lube. My brother owns six here in the valley. He's worked for or owned at least one for twenty years. His are not like that and to stand there and claim that most of them are is ridiculous. It all depends on the Franchisee/Owner. Yes there are dicks out there and unfortunately cars are an easy target since a lot of people don't even know how to change their own oil. There are still honest business owners out there, though. It'd be nice if the news ever focused on that...........

Not to sound like Ron, but did you mean "shady" or "shoddy" or is this just a bit of "irony"? j/k!

Just for fun, mark your oil filter w/ a sharpie next time & see if they change it. Hotrod, your bro & every other honest Jiffy Lube franchisee should be all over corporate HQ to make sure that these assfucks don't do any more damage to the brand than they've already done. Sorry, but 5 out of 9 in a very major market is pretty damning, and indicates a top-down policy more than just benign neglect.

I once brought my wife's SUV to a nearby Valvoline outfit. They gave me the usual "padding" speech, which I declined all of the extras of course. Then the "manager" comes in holding this caked-on super-dirty air filter that looked like it had been buried in a chimney's soot, told me he had just pulled it out of my car, and "strongly advised" replacing it.

I laughed in his face. Literally. Then I told him that he didn't pull that out of my car, because I had just replaced the air filter MYSELF the prior week and it was BRAND NEW. He tried to "prove" it was mine by telling me to look under my hood, as it was the one from my car and there wasn't one there now.

At this point, I went ballistic angry at his bullshit and demanded that he put MY REAL air filter back in the car, throw out that piece of shit he hides in the bay trying to rip off unsuspecting customers, or I'd be calling the cops on my cell phone for his theft & fraud, and then the AG's consumer affairs/legal complaints office the next morning. I checked the filter when I got back home and - lo and behold - there was my clean one.

I never went back to that branch, and called Valvoline corporate to complain about his @ss.

I already sent the link to my brother as an FYI. Yeah, 5 out of 9 in one market looks bad, but at the same time were they all owned by the same guy? Hard to say for sure, and yes the oil change business used to be a very "shady" operation and there were a few very unsavory characters operating here. I've worked for them and my brothers' shops when I was younger and have seen the differences. Eventualy, my brother has been able to buy/franchise the majority of the stores here and I guarantee, that if any of his employees or managers pulled this kind of crap, they'd be gone for sure.
I'll have to ask and I'm not sure if they still do it, but when they were Minit-Lube, corporate used to send their own people in to get their oil changed. Kind of like a "secret shopper" program. So I know at least at one time, corporate used to give a shit, but maybe they don't do that anymore. I'll have to ask.

I change my oil myself. for most work that I can't do, I take it to the Honda dealership. Not one ounce of trouble with the Honda dealers.

What's with this change the oil every 3000 miles? Look in your owners book. I knew a guy the had a Honda and the book said "every 7000 miles". Where do you think all that old oil goes? They take and clean it and ship it right back so some other customer can be "serviced". Used oil can be cleaned up, but shouldn't they tell you that that is what is going into your crankcase?
I am a true ass set to this board.
