3000 miles or every 3 months is an industry standard.
Depending on driving conditions, you can go 7000 or need it changed after only 1500. My Toyota owners manual says to do it every 5000.
As for old oil, it does not get cleaned up and put back into the market.
It gets used to make asphalt.
You cannot "clean" used motor oil enough to have it be re-useable in a car.

When I started driving (1985) oil lasted 5000 miles - recommended by the change places themselves. Over time it went down to 3500 miles, now it's 3000, what a joke!

Change it every 5-7 I go 10k on synthetic and have put 200k miles on two vehicles with no engine issues.

That is the biggest scam of all - 3k.

Yep... I read that too...it will burn very nicely.
Sorry Fett, but you cannot clean used motor oil enough to be reused as motor oil.
It can be recycled down, not up. It's then used in things like asphalt or as Lou stated, diesel fuel, or some other oil based product.
All oil change shops dump the used oil into one under ground container for collection. Allthough there are some that still barrel it up. It's a combination of engine oil, tranny fluid, gear oil and what ever else they decide to drop into the tank.

As for the 3k oil change rule, it's a scam in the fact that everyone quotes it as a "required" thing. The owners manual for your car is what you are "required" to follow to maintain your warranty.
Drive your car around the AZ desert during the summer and 10w30 will crap out well before 3k miles... synthetic or not.
            That is a fact.

No, it is not a fact. http://www.earth911.org/master.asp?s=lib&a=oil/uses.asp That's the fact, Jack.

Shit.. I'd better remember this thread when I take my guitar in for a set-up. Just in case...

There have been plenty of scam programs in the UK exposing dodgy builders, repairers etc. People who rip off the general public need to be as they say in Jaws - "Those paint happy bastards caught and hung up by their bushker browns"
                Fuck ebay, fuck paypal

                  Interesting read.
It would be nice if more than 14% were re-refined back into base stock.
But as the article states, it's still not a cost effective process yet.

74% of all oil re-use/recycling in the U.S. is for burning in turbines, incinerators, power plants, cement kilns and manufacturing facilities (asphalt, steel, etc…).
So I stand corrected... to a certain extent.

You'd best get real friendly with any tech that is going to "fix" your guitar. Before you take her in, go into the shop and talk up the guy. If you already know this, nevermind. I took a tube amp to a guy that did work for the Grateful Dead and the like. 3 months later, I got it back. He didn't charge me a lot. I brought the amp in as "dead". Turns out it was nothing more that a loose multi-plug, like in a car. The reason I knew that is it cut out on me after I got it back and I took it down and jiggled the plug. Wa La, it worked. Techs suck if they can get away with it.

Well, I was right to a certain extent. At 14%, I have Bush numbers.

In the trailerpark, we dump our used motor oil in this big pit. There must be 1500 gallons of it in there. The owner says: "Be my guest" He's just going to wait until he has an oil well built to pump it back up.
