Smoke on the Water - too bad so many people play it in the wrong key! So many playing it in A on the E and A strings, how can they not hear they're in the wrong key?

Oh hell, there are so many.

I think Smoke on the Water is a good bit more recognizeable than Layla.

However, there are tons of riffs that are instantaneously recognizeable by the masses:

      Back in Black
      You Shook Me
      Purple Haze
      Aint Talking 'bout Love
      Runnin' with the Devil
      FREE BIRD
      Whole Lotta Love
      Sunshine of Your Love
      Iron Man
      Paranoid

And on and on and on and on and on.......

      Mike

p.s. What key are you supposed to play Smoke in? Shit, I always play it A!!

      Mike
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

My first LP was Machine Head so I'm thinkin smoke on the water with iron man runnin a close second however sweet home alabama sure is prolific. Purple Haze is an undeniable contender.

its got to be smoke on the water.
A classic thats not been mentioned yet is the riff from Beat it, by Jackson. Whole lotta love is well known in UK because it was the theme tune for Top of the Pops for ages!

think you mean sweet home alabama? there really is no riff per se in free bird.

It's in G, double stops. You can either use open G and D, then 3rd, 5th and 6th frets, or start on 5th fret D and A strings. Or to make it fuller use the R5O 3-string power chords, but Ritchie just played double stops through a Marshall Major 200-watt head.

Actually, one that's even easier and more recognizable is probably the riff in Satisfaction by the Stones.

The answer without a doubt has to be smoke on the water.

First one that popped in my head was Whole Lotta Love. The Stones' Satisfaction and Brown Sugar also come to mind way before Layla, as far as I'm concerned.

If we're really saying "in history", I'm thinking the motif to Beethoven's 5th Symphony would win, at least for Western civilization.
