The first song I ever learnt was Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash, but Smoke on the Water is probably the first riff most people learn, and certainly recognizable.

      BS....
"The most rocognizable guitar riff needs to have the following:
      Universal appeal
      World wide notoriety
It needs to appear timeless (not connected to any age group)
It can't be connected to any genre of music. "

To guitar players... I agree. The post wasn't asking about just guitar players.

Smoke on the Water is the most recignizable guitar riff TO OTHER GUITAR PLAYERS. What about the other billion non players.
This may come as a shock to you but there are many people that hear riffs and don't even know what instrument is playing it.
Maybe if Smoke on the Water was a popular ring tone I would agree. I bet Crazy Train is more recognizable than Smoke on the Water exactly for that reason.

How about the bass guitar riffs in Seinfeld... before that... Barney Miller.
10 years ago it was probably the riff in the theme to The Power Rangers.

Would the bonanza theme be considered as a riff?

That is an excellent example!!! If I recall.. it was even played on an electric guitar.

Other non guitar riffs would include

                          The theme to Jaws
                          The theme to Halloween
