The first song I ever learnt was Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash, but Smoke on the Water is probably the first riff most people learn, and certainly recognizable.

This may come as a shock to you but there are many people that hear riffs and don't even know what instrument is playing it.
Maybe if Smoke on the Water was a popular ring tone I would agree. I bet Crazy Train is more recognizable than Smoke on the Water exactly for that reason.Comment
