  • PayPal cross border fee? WTF?

I just got another 1% fee tacked on an eBay sale to the UK - for a "cross border fee" what the hell is that, a legal thing or another way to jack people?

eBay gets a listing fee, final value fee, own paypal for 3% on you and then another fee for selling out of the country? It's almost as bad as a phone bill to have an online garage sale

I think it is a small fee to pay for the ability to be able to accept credit cards or money transfers from anywhere in the world. For the speed and security you get with PayPal, I really don't think a 3 or 4% fee is getting "jacked".

There are plenty of other ways to make these transfers happen, so PayPal is hardly a monopoly. But I doubt any of them are as easy as PayPal is. This is the cost of convenience.

I suppose it feels bad when you are using it as part of an ebay transaction, which has its own fees, so I am sure it hurts, but if you consider what PayPal offers, I think the fees for PayPal alone are not out of line.

Guys, remember what it used to be like selling gear before Ebay and Paypal?

You either got anally raped at the local music store or you put an ad in the local classifieds and had to deal with some scuzzball guitar players coming to your house and then low balling you and then wanting to pay with an out of state check from their girlfriend's cousin's boyfriend's half-sister's aunt .

Even after the fees I get way more for my gear when I sell it than I would have before.

Does the cross border fee make the Paypal address confirmed for international buyers? In the past, international buyers could not be confirmed thru Paypal and wondered if this has changed at all.

They probably apply the fee to Canada too which is just a suburb of the US.

True, but a lot of things sucked before the Internet. Just saying that even though things are better for buying/selling gear, these types of misc fees seem gratuitous. Let's hope google succeeds in putting some competition into the mix.

Wait until you get a counterfeit money order from overseas and have no recourse. You deposit it, it "seems" to clear, you ship the item - then weeks later your bank finds out it was counterfeit and levies your account for the money. There's nothing you can do about it either because it's overseas.

That 1% won't look so bad at that point....

Are we sure the 1% is for that kind of insurance?

I haven't seen "what" you get for that 1% yet.

You'd think that being verified would be enough, since it guarantees a sale inside the us, and if both parties are verified in their own countries, paypal seems to manage OK without an additional fee.

Since eBay/Paypal owns the transaction, from listing to payment, you'd think you'd get a one-stop shopping discount - I don't see how PayPal/eBay's overhead would have increased in the last year to need a larger percentage, but since it's not a democracy, I'll just make this a positive FYI:

"Did you know eBay/PayPal has another fee? Keep it in mind when quoting shipping overseas"

we wouldn't be in that situation.
