WOW... that's waaaaay too blatant! How sad. Do you think it's a deliberate rip or inadvertent?

I have a feeling at some point they were listening to Tom Petty, and subconsciously, Tom found his way out in their jam sessions

Inadvertant. Frusciante doesn't seem like a guy that would purposely rip off something like that. If it was purposeful why make that your first released song which summed up a story from two previous albums (title tracks from both) the story of Dani. I mean if the lyrics match they sure premeditated that since putting out Californication. It doesn't add up and to be honest that song is horrible except for the solo.

Yeah, I think it's inadvertent, too. As far as the new Pepp's stuff, I haven't liked much of their stuff in ages, which is a bummer, I liked Blood, Sugar, etc. In fact, the Californication stuff I though kinda blew. I always change my radio when they come on, mostly a subconcious thing... my hand just juts out to the tuners and changes to a different station, as if it has a mind of it's own. Weirdest thing!

I am a huge Frusciante fan not a huge Pepper fan though. Kiedis annoys the hell out of me but I still listen for John's guitar work. His solo stuff is great.

I never liked the RHCP, it always sounds to me like the singer is purposly trying to sing flat and just a nut hair off of out of key.

y'know, I always felt the same. Especially when my little sis kept playing Blood Sugar over & over back in high school. I could tolerate it though, for that rhythm section. I've always said I'd buy a RHCP album if they dropped the vocals & guitar off it.

I don't think it's on purpose. I believe he just naturally sings flat and out of key.

Another thing interesting to note is that Rick Rubin produced both the RHCP album, and Tom Petty's album .... Surely he would have noticed the similarities!

                          Funny,
I wondered why I liked that song.

Same chord progression and same beat, but big f'n whoop. Similar. But it ain't the same song. And, no, I'm no big Peppers fan by any means.

I mean, it ain't like that Nickleback comparison, where they totally copied themselves.

Inadvertent at first but I am sure when it was brought to their attention before the CD was released they said fuk it. There are too many people screening new releases to not have caught that one.

So then does Tom Petty owe the Jayhawks a check too? Does Tom really want to open that can of worms?
