My neck of the woods LOL!

I'm glad I do all of my own PC work. I feel sorry for those who don't.

Fuck!...That's the first thing I do when I trash or part out a computer. Hard drive is always first to get yanked out and destroyed. I bend and break the reader arms off the discs...then pry the discs off the spindle, and grind them down on my grinding wheel. I don't take the drill approach...that's boring. Besides....hard drive discs throw a nice shower of sparks when you grind them!...LOL!

Not that I have anything info-sensitive on my computer to hide except for volumes and volumes of porn!!

All you have to do is "FORMAT C: /U" We do it with every drive we take in.

Odds are most of the people at Best Buy don't know how to do that.

The funny thing is, why was that drive sold if it was supposedly bad ???

I'd pay for a video of your paranoia hard drive kill procedure!

If it's ultra-sensative data, this isn't enough to permanantly erase everything. You'll need to zero-out all the data first.

If money is no option and you really want to get the information back, there is really no way to completely remove the data, apart from physically destroying the drive.

                    My point exactly...

Matt...the data doesn't go away even with a format C:/U
That just splits the encrypted data into different segments on the drive.
There is high tech software that can put this back together.

Henrik....next one I do (which may be this one...LOL!)
I will film it and send it to you. It's quite spectacular really!! HEHE!!

The drive wasn't bad - the techs at Best Buy aren't smart enough to format and reload the O/S. It was probaby sent back to Maxtor, they found nothing wrong with it (or something easy to fix), so they sold it as a refurb to a clearing house.

This is why I would never sell a hard drive and prefer to destroy them myself instead of returnign under warranty. Becasue even after multiple low Levels or Format /Us there is still the possibility of Data being recovered, better to destroy the drive yourself

A DOS format will not erase the data, but a low level format will. That's what I use.
