Theres a great "scene" website somewhere on the net that has all kinds of cool listing for stores in KC.

Formerly NoCal (formerly KS, formerly IN, formerly AZ, formerly SoCal ....) soon to be da Windy City, I'm just playing vagrant for the moment.

musicians friend has one of their warehouse's just outside of KC. if you can, check out the clearance center, all sorts of shit for sale on the cheap. everything from neck-thru guitars with broken necks to things someone returned simply because they didnt like it. nothing wrong with it at all, but they can't re-sell it as new, so cheap it goes. i spent hours there. oh yeah, soundproof rooms to try things out too, loudly. thats a good idea.

thats it. if i remember right, its kind of a bitch to find. that whole area is industrial, warehouses everywhere. the clearence center is just a little storefront attached to the actual Musicians Friend warehouse. its worth searching for, i assure you!
