The Allman bros have to considered the leader of the whole southern rock scene, but LYNYRD SKYNYRD, was the undisputed best of the bunch Outlaws were good but not too prolific, Charlie Daniels, Little Feat, Marshall Tucker, 38 Special all had their moments, Molly Hatchet just plain kicks ass, Southern Rock is probably one of favorite kinds of musicLast edited by FusionFarmer; 07-08-2006, 09:37 AM.I say the boy ain't right!

The Allmans opened the door for all those that followed but I think Skynyrd took it to another level.
I never really thought of ZZTop or the Black Crows as southern rock

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

SKYNYRD is the best.
Allmans began the gnere, and there is a great CMT show on Southern Rock which goes back to the days of the Allmans and the beginings, and it is very well done.
As for the others: Blackfoot was my other favorite, followed by Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws.
Anyone who saw Blackfoot in the 1980s saw one of the most intense performers ever: Ricky Medlocke just KICKED ASS! He was insane! He's great to watch now, but back then......WOW!
I saw them OPEN for Ted Nugent once and I also saw them HEADLINE with Def Leppard (yes indeed!) as support!
W/O a doubt they, and tunes like HIGHWAY SONG, and TRAIN TRAIN should be in the top 10, let alone top 20 of this list!!

Allman Bros definitely were the best, IMO. Such a well rounded diverse band that drew from many styles., Then Outlaws and Skynyrd in no particular order, and what about Little Feat? If you haven't heard it the Allman Bros last album, Hitting the Note is an incredible album, you want to talk about 2 great guitarists, they don't get much better than Haynes and Trucks.
