Bill, your rather long winded post is one I totally agree with. I don't always agree with you, but you are spot on in this case.

One thing though. Your post pretty much deals with the so called "minority" segment of society. I am seeing more and more stupid white kids lately too, and can only wonder why. Are the schools failing to teach them? Or are they just pushing them through the system so they don't get left back?
Maybe the parents aren't keeping tabs on these kids. I think that today, parents are far too quick to defend their kids when they do wrong or get in trouble at school.

When I was in school, I KNEW that if I got in trouble at school or the school phoned my house to talk to my parents about somethin negative, my ass was getting a beating and punishment.

Parents today rush to the school and blame everyone else for their kids problems. Let the kids learn from their mistakes! All they are learning now, is that mom or dad will fix all their fuck ups. What about when they get into the real world?

Mommy and daddy can't fix things with the young adult's boss or college professor.

Well said man I also agree, it is just not minorities anymore, this whole country is experiencing this down turn. I also agree, bring back punishment, raise the standards and hold people accountable again. Jack.

Maybe in CT. I grew up in a fairly nice suburb in Michigan and in my public high school there were no German cars in the faculty lot, those were all in the STUDENT lot! Damn spoiled rich kids, I wish I were one of them. Anyway, the point is that most all of the teachers had to commute to the school because they couldn't afford to live in our town.

The absolute highest paid teacher at my high school (meaning she had a Master's degree and had been at the school for 30 years, had senority over everyone including the administrators, was really involved in everything and a great teacher) made $59k at the end of her career.

Human pollution are the lazy fucks that shoot kids out like a lawn boy and expect society to raise THEIR kids for them. They want the welfare system to support their ass and take no responibility in teaching their kids and moral values or just how to be a decent, contributing member of society.
Most kids these days have a very severe case of entitlement syndrome.
They think the world should be handed to them on a silver platter.
I see these snot nosed little pricks everywhere and don't hesitate for one moment to put any of them in their place.
When I went to school, if you fucked up, everyone knew about it... parents, principle, teachers and half the student body.
And bring back the frikkin paddle!
Problem with gang bangers in school... give the police the authority to just shoot the pricks on sight. They are domestic terrorists.
They have no business being their. All they want to do is sell their drugs and recruit more members. They could give a shit about learning anything of value. They serve no purpose in society other than to create chaos.
All welfare programs should have an 18 month time limit... after that, you're on your own buddy. Maybe this will stop the endless breading for welfare checks.

bullshit. i have been teaching 9 years and make 33,000 before taxes and insurance.

it's not about the money. it is about the working conditions. so many people think teachers only complain about the money. NOT AT ALL!!!!

let me tell you some stories about my last year teaching. first i will mention that i teach middle school, grades 6,7,8. my school has been awarded six consecutive "A"'s from the state of FL. we are one of the best academic schools in pinellas county.

last year, a kid pulled a knife on his science teacher. she took off her belt and hit him in the face with the buckle when he came at her. she got fired and his parents sued her. he got a one day suspension.

a group of boys gang raped a girl in one of the courtyard bathrooms. since there were no witnesses and it was her word against theirs, it went unpunished by the schoo system. it became a criminal matter, which was dismissed for lack of evidence.

a plant operator was hit so hard in the back of the head with a text book that his skull fractured. when he threatened to "beat the fuck" out of the kid that hit him, he was fired. the kid got a one day suspension.

i have been spit on, right in the face, by kids that don't want to do my assignment. PARENTS have spit on teachers for telling them that their child was a disturbance in class. nice, huh?

the problem is that the students have more rights than the adults. i have 3 ways i can discipline my class unless i want to be brought up on ethics charges. 1) call home. 2) assign a detention. 3) write a discipline referral.

parent phone calls can be effective, but more often than not, this is the response you will get: "don't call me at work. that kid is your problem during these hours. you deal with it." supportive, huh?

keep in mind that you don't really have to call the parents of the student that shows up and does thier work. usually you call for the turd that is preventing the good kids from being able to concentrate.

okay, detention. i assign one.....the kid won't show. okay call home. parents say, "he/she ain't coming. your reason for giving the detnetion was stupid." not always.....but more often than not.

let's talk about the big one...the referral!! kid gets sent to the AP. regardless of the incident (assualt, skipping, defiance, etc.) the first step the they MUST follow is a verbal reprimand and a phone call home. so let's say billy stabs me with scissors (which i have had happen to me). he gets sent to the office for his verbal reprimand. i can follow up by pressing charges with the school resource officer, but they often try to discourage it.

try this: go to work and be told that if you "product" (students) doesn't meet "X" requirements then you will be sanctioned (pay cut, suspension, etc.)......but you are powerless to control the outcome of your "product"!!!

public school teachers are required to have a 4 year college degree, pass and maintain state certification (we have to take continuing education classes or attend trainings at our expense so we can stay "current" with educational trends and techniques). we must have a certain number of credits every 5 years or we lose our certificate and can not continue to teach. ALL public school teachers MUST do this or your contract is not renewed.

FYI - that is NOT the case with private school teachers (at least in FL). private schools can hire without college degrees and/or state certifications since they are NOT funded by public dollars. private shools also don't have to meet federal education requirements, like No Child Left Behind, because they are NOT funded by public dollars. that is national. private does not always mean better. check your teachers and school curriculum programs. it is possible that your child's teacher only has a high school diploma!!!

as tax paying citizens, everyone should be SUPER pissed at the state of education. BUT STOP BLAMING THE TEACHERS!!!! education has a 5 year burn out period. most new teachers coming out of college don't last more than 5 years. people that go into education as a second career rarely last 2 years. the BS we have to endure for the expectaions put on us is crippling.

education NEEDS an overhaul, but it has to start with home. parents, family values....THESE are the things that affect education.

i take my job VERY seriously. i am on summer vacation and i spend about 25 hours a week - unpaid, BTW - doing lesson plans for the next school year. when i show up the first day i usually have my forst grading period of lesson plans done.

BTW - all those graded papers, all those lesson plans (which have to align to federal AND state education guidelines EVERYDAY, EVERY LESSON, EVERY QUESTION - and you have to write which standards your lessons align to, in your plan book) are worked on in our personal time, without pay. the 45 minutes we get to prepare BEFORE class each day is spent with parent conferences, meetings, trainings....our 53 minute planning period during the day is spent calling parents, answering questions, mentoring struggling students, going to the RR (which we can't do whenever we NEED to because we can't leave our classes unsupervised)....

so as a teacher some of the attitudes in this thread really crawl under my skin. come spend a week doing my job, and then talk shit. get spit on. have 5 kids out 125 (which is how many i teach EVERYDAY) bring paper to class. spend hundreds of your own dollars to buy paper and folders and books for the kids (and NEVER get reimbursed)...then talk shit about most teachers drive german cars.

this is SO true. think about this: the kids that disrupt the classes have MORE RIGHTS than the kids that are trying to learn. some kid can tell me to fuck myslef and i can let go of that...i mean, c'mon, the kid is 10. i am NOT hurt by their words.

but why should sally work-hard be disrupted CONSTANTLY by these idiots? what about her right to a FREE, PUBLIC EDUCATION?!?! she can't learn. i feel horribly for the good kids. they lose out on so much because we are more concerned with individual rights than the rights of the group.

if i have a class of 32, and there are 4 disruptive students, their actions can and will take up more of my time than i can spend answer questions and facilitating education.

and remember, i teach at a GREAT school, not some crappy ghetto school.

parents need to rise up and file class action lawsuits against the school districts, parents of the disruptive kids, and the state government before anything will change!!!

remember, YOUR tax dollars pay for these schools.

I think that down south, the pay is not so good for teachers. At least it wasn't when my brother started teaching. He and his wife teach here in NJ and I can assure you, they are doing pretty good salary wise.

So do 9 out of 10 white highschool kids.:ROTF: The one right thing I did in life was stay in Marin County in the same house and let my son go from K through 12th with the same kids and an alright, if not very good, school system. He's 23 now and still hasn't figured out if he will go to college, but his school experience was stable. I am SOOOOO glad I don't have to deal with the stuff that is going on now. My old man tip of the day is, keep your kids in the same school system as long as you can as long as it's doing a good job.

The whole systems needs an overhaul.

Implementation 1:

A. Must be 18 yrs. get married and to have children. It MUST be a law!
This would help resolve alot of crap!
If the underage individual (man or girl makes no difference) violates this law. The reprimand or penality, sterilization until 21 yrs old. Upon reaching 21 yrs old, the surgery or vaccine to withdraw the sterilization is done. Followed up by a series of exams and couseling to ensure the tax payers money and the individual is ready for marriage and parenting.
If the individual hasn't violated the 18 yr old law then he or she must do the following.
B. The exams/assements...
He or she, will have to take an IQ or assement test and series of counseling to determine if they are mentally compentent to accept the role of parenting before they have children together. Upon failing the exam, must wait one full year before retaking the exam. During the waiting time, the indivdual must work full time and show records of this full time employment. If college student/s, must finish college before having babies.
They can marry BUT NO babies.

Implementation 2:

A. The parents of the ones deciding to get married and have children at the ages of 18 -20, must pass an evauation exam to determine if they are mentally competent, have full time job. If not able to meet or pass the criteria, their child or children will not be be permitted to have children.
The child (he or she) desiring children, can get married but MUST be sterialized untill 21 yrs old. before having children. Yes, all because mom and dad fialed to pass the assement exam for the young adult desiring children. This would also help eliminate alot of crap!

Implementation 3:

Welfare, would only be for those that were clearly evident of being mentally incompetent. and permanently phyiscially handicaped and unable to work becuase of the physical impairment. No exceptions. Any state guilty of violating, the leaders of that state will give up their first born to be executed! Harsh? Yes, but needful to curb intolerance for such defiance to help resolve the problems plaquing society. Leaders need to held accounted, and any passiveness needs to be dealt with accordingly.

I could really run with this whole scenario, but in my view, the problems won't ever get the attention or correction needed, untill unfortunately theres an uprising in various states. Sending our children to private schools will help to a degree but won't do enough. Bills post nailed alot of it indeed, especially the home part. Its definitely a "what goes on in the home" that in part allows this continuation of defiency. The other, is public and private policies and government. This needs a complete overhaul.
Were dealing with a change in society, a downward spiraling where the norm is becoming an accepted vast pool of human stupidity with the inability to be accountful.

Thanks, markD. Well stated. School is now the surrogate "Parent". It was never supposed to be that way. I grew up when home was home and school was school. Not anymore. School Systems are as old as our country and were just fine until about 20 years ago. Now, the school system has to deal with the general breakdown of our society. This is, nor has it ever been, their mission. Schooling was supposed to make a youngster an educated citizen. Not raise the little tikes.
