  • Wisdom Teeth (and your experience)

    This just sucks...

When you're young, dependant and not freely opinionated, this doesn't seem to big a big deal. But I am 35 now and quite at odds because I'm an arrogant grownup lol.
So, I'm due to have my jaw brutally assaulted and 4 wisdom teeth yanked.

Do tell you're experiences so I can fret and worry.
What route did you take (local anesthetic, nitrous, or intravenous sedation)
What route did you wish you had taken, but didn't and suffered rofl
Did you acquire good drugs that alleviated any discomfort post op such as valium, etc? Or did it just suck ass for a while.
How long was recovery to where you could go back to work, eat normally or even not notice you had anything done.
    Any complications?
What did you do the night before? lol (This will be my worst night for sure)
Or any other info you would like to share. (Brutal or not)

Personally, I want to be practically dead and wake up wondering how long I have been out.

Coming from experience with 'whip-itz', returning from a blackout is surely more enjoyable when the jaw doesn't feel run over afterwards.

It all depends on how badly impacted they are. Some of them come out easily & some are a major bitch. Mine were borderline & I made the mistake of just going with a local anesthetic. If I had it to do over again I'd have had them put me under. Recovery wasn't bad for me. I think I took Percocet for a day or so. Be sure & follow the post-op directions exactly, because you don't want to end up with dry socket. A couple of my friends had that & they said it hurt way more than the actual procedure.

I had two wisdom teeth pulled at one sitting, and a third pulled at a later date.

Both times my dentist used local anesthetic.

I think I remember him prescribing Tylenol III with codeine.

I believe I took Friday afternoon off to have my teeth pulled, and was back at work the following Monday.

He told me not to drink alcohol or smoke for at least a couple of days... but I drank and I smoked, with no ill effects

      Hope this helps!

I had pretty much the same experience. It didn't hurt at all until later, and that was more of an aching in my jaw. It kinda felt like I had been punched in the face a few times.

It was funny when the dentist removed them. The first one cracked into several pieces and he had to pull them all out. The second one came out cleanly, but made a creaky noise like pulling a nail as the root pulled out of my jaw. Good times!!!

Just had one done with local only, funny you ask. I think with 4 they usually put you out or at least gas you. Surgeon had headphones which was nice. Just used advil after and sat around on the couch the rest of the day.

anaesthetic here, all 4 done at once. only light swelling, minimal after bleeding, an only a day or two 'recovery' time. best Ive heard of! big props to my old man for keeping me in private health care until I had it done and sniffing out the best surgeon (only works here 2 days per month).

Me - I had all 4 surgically removed. I had nitrous and an IV. Of course my bottom ones were coming in sideways - the top was facing the front of my mouth, and the top ones wouldn't come all the way in. And the evil oral surgeons gave me pretty much nothing when it came to pain killers to take home.

Overall though - it wasn't horrible pain. My jaw was uncomfortable. They do tell you to only do soft foods and no smoking/drinking through straws - nothing where you have to suck because it can split the wound open.

As far as I'm concerned - there are a lot of worse things to do. But good luck and do something nice for yourself the night before!

I had all four removed at once. It was an involved procedure so they put me under. They prescribed an anti-inflammatory, and pain reliever. I didn't really experience much pain, other than after the procedure. You need to take it easy on the solid foods for a bit though. They'll go over everything with you.

it's not that bad. I had 4 bone impacted wisdom teeth. I'm afraid of the dentist, so I didn't go and one of them came through anbd broke a molar, and i had to have it pulled. Then the wisdom tooth was decayed (even though it never had food on it) and had to be pulled too. It was able to be pulled, since it erupted, and broke another tooth.

The other three were really fucked up. They had to cut my gums and section the teeth to get them out.

I had no after surgery pain, swelling or anything.

It's easy. I was out for the whole thing, woke up, came home, took pills, slept, then went back to normal.

I had mine yanked a couple years ago and took the knockout cocktail option... Woke up and didn't feel a thing.

He gave me the different options, but said he recommended the knockout. I have had teeth pulled where they didn't knock me out and I pretty much felt the whole thing. Not fucking fun, dude!

Take the sedation and be happy you did...

Mine went well. No problems. I had 4 yanked at about 20 years of age. I had an IV...Not sure what it was, but I do recall waking up in the chair. I didnt feel anything, just remember them saying "he's awake!...more sodimmnnn.zzzzzzz".

The thing to be careful of is a "dry socket". When they stitch up the hole, the dentist wants a clot to form in the void where the tooth was. If that clot comes out (usually via drinking through a straw, or smoking), I'm told it can be very painful.

They don't have to stitch the hole for you to get dry socket. They also only have "ideas" what causes dry socket. All of the above may or may not cause it. People get it sometimes from doing those, or doing none of those.

The dentists said that dry socket is the most pain you can have in your mouth.

If you get it, you go right in, get a medicated packing, and pain is like instantly gone.

They popped right out, and i didn;t use any of the percs he prescribed.. I actually was going to SCUBA the next day, but he warned me about the possibility of blowing out a sinus...
My sis had 4 impacted, and hers was major surgery

Alright, heres my take on this subject...

I had to have my wisdom teeth out when I was about 21 (Im 24 now). The bottoms were impacted, the tops were not. Went in for the surgery, knocked out completley during. Woke up feeling fine, no big deal. Keep in mind, I have a HIGH pain tolerance. Once the stuff started to wear off, it got worse... and worse... and worse... the pain was unreal.

This is coming from someone who literally ripped two bottom front teeth out when I was younger due to a tick disorder... long story, tick is long gone though.

Anyway, the pain stayed. Two large superball-sized bumps on each side of my lower jaw where the teeth were removed, VERY tender areas. Sharp edges on the bone to gums where the lower teeth were removed. Then I got drysockets on the bottom ones. Went back and they stuffed some clove-like strip in there that fell out 2 hours later. I was out of work for a week and a half, only expected to be out two days or so.

Long story short, my case was a worst case scenario. If you expect what I wrote, then youll be better off than if you dont expect it. Everyone said it wasnt bad... well let me tell you, it was the exact opposite.

Ive had a few surgerys... circular saw accident on right hand, then nerve graph from right forearm to had from curcular saw. The carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel nerve relocation surgery. The ONLY one that was worse than the wisdom teeth was having my tonsils and adnoids out a few months ago. Im not even going to get into that, lets just say Im glad I NEVER have to go through that again.

                              Good luck buddy!
