I don't think you should. We all get attached to animals, as you have here, but we're just a little better equiped to deal with loss than the little ones. I'd say something like "The doctor said he'll take care of him and set him free when he's better". A little white lie would save alot of tears and maybe squash a bad memory before it happens.

Again, you did a nice thing and I'm sorry for the loss .

Yea Mark, I'd say he's flying free. I have had to put down a number of Purple Martins young and old at the Rehab clinic in my time Martineering. It's tough, especially on the children. It was a great effort and you'll be blessed many times over for doing what you could do. Just like everyone's saying, you tell them the hawk is flying in the heavens.

Shit man.. I am sorry to hear that. I gotta agree with what others are syaing. It is probably best just to say that the doc took care of the bird. I am sorry about the outcome, but I wouldn't be at all sorry about what you did.

                    R.I.P. Swoop <--- Badass name =)

What a beautiful bird! Kudos to you Mark! Even if he didn't make it, he knew the love y'all showed him in his darkest hours. I'm sorry he had to be euthanized but it was truly the best thing for him. You did all that you could to save him.

I've never been near a hawk, but saved a seagull once in downtown Santa Monica. He flew into a car and basically just knocked himself silly, then was staggering around, toward the traffic-filled street. I just basically kept interposing myself between him and the street, keeping him on the sidewalk. After a few minutes his head cleared and he flew off no worse for wear! It made me high as a kite for a week to have done something to save a life!

They're not hawks, but they do have long sharp beaks! The scariest part was picking him up to put him on the sidewalk! He was dazed and confused, but I realized he could've taken some fingers with no problem! He seemed to know I was there to help though.
